Swim
Comments: The buoy started drifting RIGHT before our wave went off. The race director instructed us to use the canoe as our marker. Since there were four red canoes, sighting was pretty hopeless. I know I swam more than a half mile. When we got out there, they told us to use the buoy again?? Slowed down a bit mid session, then picked up my arm cadence towards the end. Found my rabbit swimmer, who pushed me to stay ahead of her. What would you do differently?: More swim practice. Transition 1
Comments: This transition time includes running 600 yards from the shore over to transition - yikes! What would you do differently?: Nothing. Bike
Comments: Pushed it on the bike today - I really wanted to beat the girl I've seen at track practice. We passed each other a few times, and I held her off on the last 6 miles of the bike, but she caught me .5 miles into the run. Used the people around me to push myself (reduce number of people passing!). Felt pretty strong out there today. What would you do differently?: More endurance work even when I'm tired. Transition 2
What would you do differently?: Nothing. Run
Comments: Woo-doggy, it was HOT out there. Dusty and sandy, big rocks tempting my ankles to roll (and they did, only once). The arches of my feet really screamed as soon as I started, only letting up a little on mile 3. Tried to walk as little as possible (probably 10-15% of total distance?). Pushed myself hard when I saw a girl in a white shirt (did I know her?), who said, "I've been trying to catch you!" She didn't pass me on the run, so I was psyched. What would you do differently?: Heal feet, running practice this winter, lose 5 more lbs. to lighten the load. Probably skip water bottle to hold on this short of a run. No socks wasn't a problem throughout the ride/run. Post race
Warm down: STRETCH! Ice cold water, mingle, pack bag, swim with the girls, awards ceremony, food. What limited your ability to perform faster: My painful foot arches - I pushed it on the bike and probably could have pushed it as hard on the run, had I not had this pain. Consider different orthotics on the run, possible also for cycling shoes? Event comments: When I arrived at 7:30+, the buoys were only just then being blown up and put in the water - felt like this could have been taken care of earlier, probably would have caught the drifting buoy issue before the race. Food good (dogs and burgers), but no healthier options (fruit, juice, muffins). Supportive volunteer staff with flags, gave clear directions. The ride course was NOT swept, and I passed over many dangerous patches of rock, sand, and divots in the path to the park. A simple trip around the course with a broom would have improved safety. Still, a gorgeous day in a gorgeous park - can't argue! Last updated: 2007-03-30 12:00 AM
