Swim
Comments: felt pretty comfortable for 2/3 of the swim. Got confused on one turnaround and started back up the length I had just completed. Heard Paul and crew yelling "BILL, NO!" and determined what I had done before colliding with other swimmer. What would you do differently?: Pay attention underwater! Pass when needed. Practice swimming a ton more! I sprinted the last 25, but I felt like a ton of lead. My hips sank, and I couldn't get righted as I was so anxious to get out of the water. Transition 1
Comments: Shaved one minute off T1 from last year. I even wore socks this time, which added 15 seconds, but felt good on the bike! Was at the rack before others around me, as I had passed a few on the swim, and one or two more on the run over to T1. Nice to have a little space. Good exit off the rack, had a little trouble with inbound T2 traffic (should've expected it), but was okay. Got clipped in surprisingly well, and was in the big ring right after the first left turn. What would you do differently?: No socks...nuf said. Drink something while getting ready there. Go up one more gear on the back (4th) for the start. Bike
Comments: Racer 531 female was leaving T1 right behind me. She was behind me for all of campus, but then caught me on Rogersville. She went by, then I caught her back on Wrightsville with a good push, for good. (Note: 531 ended up placing 3rd in her age grp, with a 28:43 bike, which was 1st in her a.g.) Wrightsville was awful, tons of traffic, cars not giving us an inch of road, running right over potholes, coming up behind slower cyclists with no room to pass, etc. I easily lost 30-45 seconds on this road alone. Passed about 20-25 people, was only passed by 531, but passed her back. Got sick just a tad, had to "swallow some pride" once or twice. My back started hurting on Wrightsville, so I pulled it down flatter and that helped. Need to get a fitted at InsideOut before White Lake? By the way, I was fastest cyclist from Team BNB: 28:01 vs Carlson's 28:24 and Warren's 29:14; man, we're all training well! What would you do differently?: Push more. I left some on that course. Wanted to see 24, but the wind wasn't cooperating. Sprint more on the flats, don't save so much. Got spooked on the course drive-through Transition 2
Comments: Um, ran by the rack. Forgot to get that located in my mind pre-race. Duh. Almost forgot run flask, had to go back and get it (a few steps back). Was helping my competitors find the rack... Shoes went on well, that was a bonus. Glad I had the visor, it was SUNNY! What would you do differently?: Map out the rack Run
Comments: Passed some folks, was not passed by anyone that I can recall. First mile 8:08, 2nd mile 9:13, 3rd mile 7:27. Second mile seemed long...got a stomach cramp, had to modify stride for 2-3 minutes. Did lots of congratultions and encouraging to those I met and passed. Met 1 Foot and gave her a yell. Met 531 after she had turned around (before I had) and she yelled at me to push it! Started looking at the watch and adding things up, and realized I was going to beat 1:05 with about .5 mile to go. So I kicked a little harder to see by how much. What would you do differently?: Push through the pain more. Get the cadence up quicker, get in breathing rhythym sooner, control the breathing more. Head down more. Less talking, more running! Was shooting for 7:40 miles, which would have put me at 23ish. It wasn't in me this day. Post race
Warm down: 531 was there at the end to bring me in, what a great competitor! I even gave her a hug, she spurred me on the bike for sure! Didn't really warm down, just kind of walked around and stretched the old legs. Felt too good at the end. Drank a Mtn Dew, ate an oreo or two and a sugar wafer cookie, then we all ate Papa Bears hotdogs (Web loved that). Then after we packed everything up, we went over to PT's for chicken sandwiches and fries (and fresh-squeezed lemonade!) What limited your ability to perform faster: Running through the cramp. late swim start (10:38:45), so plenty of time for jitters...:)
Up at 5:45. Rouse the family. Eat a banana at 6:30. Out the door at 6:55. Arrive race site 7:20. Rack bike, put down T-mat. Meet up with Carlson, chat a bit (he's racing my age group, too)
Go pick up chip. Chat with Greg (he's 35+), but we're ALL Team BNB;)
Find the family, have Web help me setup transition. Determine where my rack is (2nd grate from trans. entrance), determine that I should probably have my bike shoes on THAT side of the bike, duh. Waffling about what top to wear due to low temp at race start, but it warms quickly, so go with tri-top. Then waffling about whether to swim in it or not. Decide to go with it for the swim.
Mill about a bit more, see Greg's swim (he's bib 49), transition to bike, and transition to run, and run finish. Ate a powerbar at 9:30 or so. Drinking Heed and 1/2 of a water bottle.
See Chris's swim (1/2 at least), then his transition to run (missed the bike?) Strong run for him. .
Jogged around a little to loosen up the legs. Swam a few laps (120 yds). Was hoping for around a 6:40 in the pool
