Pre-race routine:

Up at 4:30. Coffee, bowl of cereal, mini-bagel. Checked race bag I packed the night before, checked the bike tie downs that I fastened the night before. Left with the wife about 5:30. Took in about 1/2 liter of gatorade on the drive. At Atrium park about 5:50-6:00.
Set up transition. YMCA Corporate Challege had about 4 racks farthest from the water but closest to the mount point. I was 2nd closest bike to the main drag so was very happy about positioning. Got marked and waited and waited for word to get our timing chips. Race people were not organized. Corporate Challenge was to go off at 7:00 we get word to get our chips at 6:50.
Event warmup:

Little jog. Nothing more. Wanted to do a swim warm up but due to the delay with the timing chips no dice.

Comments:

I was worried about the swim. Water was warmer than it was outside. Delayed 7:00 start to about 7:20. Waded up to about my neck. Started off way too fast. Form went bye-bye. Breathed every stroke and sighted just as much. Stopped a couple of times since you could touch to try and catch my breath. Didn't have my HRM on but my HR was throught the roof. Didn't find my form until about 400 in. If I could have just warmed up a little I think I would have done better. The rest of the swim went pretty well once I calmed down. I know I can do much better I just need to get out and practice
What would you do differently?:

Warmed up. Practice OWS. The waves from everyone swimming caused me some issues. I need to remember to calm down and swim my race. I came out the gates way to hard. Oh yeah... A wetsuit might help too.

Comments:

Out of the water goggles and cap pulled off as I ran up the beach. Aid station was right before we enterd. Used water and gatorade to get the sand off my feet. The guy at the aid station looked at me like I was nutso. Socks and shoes on first. Rolled up the socks and they were simple to put on. I didn't un-velco my shoes so I ate some time opening them up. Putting my bike jersey on sucked. I had pinned my race number on the front for the run basically making it unable to open the last 20%. Since I was wet the fabric stuck and the pinning made it hard to get on without tearing the number. Got it on. Put on my helmet, latched helmet and grabbed bike. Overall a pretty good tranition.
What would you do differently?:

Open up the shoes for your feet dummy. Get a number belt and maybe forget about a shirt.

Comments:

Fastest I have ever ridden this course. I passed a ton of people. Got passed by a handful which really made me feel good. Pushed up the hills hard and tempo rode through rollers just shifting to keep RPM up. Saw a person on the deck that wrecked pretty bad. There were a couple racers helping him. One was an MD because he said... "I'm a doctor..." as I rode past. Yelled to a guy if anyone went for help. He said yeah. Kicked my pace up to get to the next intersection. Told the cop that was there was a pretty nasty spill... he said the paramedics were on their way. Cranked out the rest of the race. I felt really good with this ride. I fueled 1 gel about half way and drank at the right times.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing but ride lots more.
Transition 2
  • 01m 15s
Comments:

Un-velcoed shoes coming to the dismount. Didn't put them ontop of my shoes. Don't know why but I didn't. Got to dismount one foot came out the other didn't. I un-clipped it and just carried it. My other shoe still on my bike drug and got beat up a little. Next time I will just take them both off and run with them. Ran to the transition area with the bike. Racked the bike by the seat with no issues. Tossed my helmet. Put on running shoes. Out I ran.
What would you do differently?:

Get yanks for the shoes. I laced them loosely due to the transition area and the came undone during the run.
Run

Comments:

Ran out of tranistion and along the beach. My breathing pretty labored from the ride. Legs felt good. Shoe started coming untied along the beach. Had to stop and tie it. My legs did not like the stop and felt just like they did after the bike. They got re-warmed up shortly after. The course was new this year going over some cut grass trail. I ran very carefully due to the divits and water run off paths. I was not used to running rolling little hills so my HR would spike. Once on actual rode I was fine. My rabbit passed me about 1.5 and I chased him and passed him at the finish. He didn't like that. Overall I had a lot more in the tank for the run. I need to work on focusing and need to work on pushing myself more on the runs. PR on the run.
What would you do differently?:

Yanks. Better effort.
Post race
Warm down:

Walking, gatorade and some food.

I shaved about 10minutes off from my previous race, but I can't consider this a breakthrough. I didn't push as hard as I should and felt like I did a crappy job on the swim. Good time though and very proud of my finish. PR on the bike and run

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Myself... I should have pushed harder on the run and should have practiced OWS.
