Swim
Comments: I'm merely logging the time here for the swim leg. Sherri was our swimmer, and she did a wonderful job. She said the water was frickin cold! WTG Sherri! Transition 1
Comments: No idea how long T1 took, though it was fast. Since this was a relay, the T1 and T2 times aren't very meaningul -- only measures how quickly we could move the timing strap from one person to the next. ;-) Bike
Comments: As with the swim, I'm just logging the time and rank here. Kris was our biker and she did great. (She had only practiced once with her new aerobars prior to the race!) WTG Kris! Transition 2
Comments: See T1. ;-) Run
Comments: Well, there's two ways of looking at this. On the one hand, I was third from DFL in the run overall. But on the other hand, it was also a new personal 5k record for me! So, I guess you could say I'm both delighted as well as humbled. I have a lot of room to improve, but I've also come a hell of a long way since January, when I couldn't even run 50 yards. What would you do differently?: Well, the heat got to me and I wasn't adequately hydrated. All my run training has been at night, when the temps are much cooler. My HR was easily 10 to 15 beats higher than normal given the circumstances. Also, my training volume was quite light this past month, as I was fighting to rediscover my motivation at times. So what would I do differently if I could do it over? Train more, and train during the daytime so I could be ready for the heat. Post race
Warm down: Not much really. Just met up with the gang and we all yakked about the race for a bit as we walked back to our cars. What limited your ability to perform faster: The heat and my lack of run volume this past month. Event comments: Overall, I really enjoyed myself. It was a blast to be part of a relay where we were all novices, and to witness Matt during his first ever tri (WTG Matt!), and watch Kelly and Mike. I'm definitely looking forward to doing my first full triathlon next season! And I kind of hope the relay thing turns into an annual event amongst our group -- would be fun! Got up around 5:30 am and made my way to Starbucks for some coffee. Which is good, cuz before my morning coffee, I'm cranky as hell. Bought some muffins and headed to the race site. Got into the transition area around 6 am or thereabouts, and met up with the other two members of my team, Kris and Sherri. Sherri was doing the swim, and Kris the bike. I was doing the run. Hung out with them, as well as Matt (Mblackman, Sherri's hubby), Kelly (KellyM), and Mike (daredevil001), who were all doing the full triathlon themselves. Mike F. (Kris' hubby) was also there cheering us on.
Stretching, jogging from end to end in the transition area, more stretching. Found it hard to keep my back from tightening up and aching. Kind of understandable, since the relay teams didn't start until 8 am, so my run probably wouldn't begin before 8:45 or so. Sitting in transition for over 2 hours was a little bit crazy, but we managed. Once the race got under way, it was neat to watch all the athletes -- excuse me, TRIathletes -- zipping through T1 and T2. All shapes and sizes, ages and abilities. Very inspiring.
