Swim
Comments: I was very happy with my time. Master's swim class really paid off, because I would not have liked being in the pack. I was initially worried about the start, from all the horror stories I had heard. Then the strap on my goggles actually came undone with one minute to race start. Talk about getting nervous trying to fix my goggles before they started the race and everyone swam over the top of me. Lucky me I fixed them with about 20 seconds to spare. I started in the front to the outside and had minimal contact getting started. Mostly people hitting my feet and occasionally I side swiped some people. I kept calm and increased my pace to give me some distance from the majority of the pack. The last 2/3rds of the swim I was basically by myself, except when I was passing those other guys :) I think I came out within the top 10/12 for my wave. I swam until my hands touched bottom, which was about knee deep. Then ran to the transition, which was about 80 yards uphill. What would you do differently?: Not much maybe swim in a little farther and change to a breast stroke or porpoise at the end so I don't have to run in the water so far. Transition 1
Comments: I thought this went well for not really practicing transitions. Putting on a skin tight shirt when wet is not a good idea. What would you do differently?: not put on my shirt, this would have saved me a lot of time. Bike
Comments: I goofed and didn't turn on and reset my cycling computer. and the Flight Deck button was stuck so I couldn't monitor my settings. I'd only had my bike for about 3 weeks prior to the race. I thought I would be faster but I'm satisfied with my performance. What would you do differently?: Double check cycling computer before race start. Be more aggressive. I was trying to save myself for the run and I could have powered up the hills faster. Transition 2
Comments: this could have been faster. I was biking in my running shoes, so all I had to do was rack the bike, take off my helmet, put on a ball cap, and tie on my running number. I also drank some accelerade. What would you do differently?: take helmet off before getting to my rack. I could've run with my bike in one hand and helmet in the other. Run
Comments: AWESOME!! Best 5k to date. I didn't think I could keep up that kind of pace. During training I was always around 26-28 minutes. And I was hoping for 28-30 minutes and not having to walk. My calves were tight and my butt was sore from the bike, but I had done a few bricks so maybe everything hurting from the start kept me focused on going and not stopping. During the run I had thought I was going really slow b/c it seemed like everyone was passing me. I guess just the energy of the race and the will to finish without walking kept my pace up. The fans were really encouraging, people I didn't even know were cheering me on, even the police that were guiding traffic were rooting for everyone. What would you do differently?: not much, this was a great time for me. Post race
Warm down: walked around and stretched a little, ate a banana drank lots of gatorade. Ate pizza, hot dog and a hamburger. Bad food never tasted to good. What limited your ability to perform faster: This was my first event, which I'd only been training for about 2 months. I could use more strength training to really power up the hills and keep a faster cadence on the bike. Run more, I hate running so I trained the least on that sport. I thought if I could do the other two well I could just walk part of the course if I needed to. Event comments: I had a great time at my first event and learned a lot about what I need to be focusing on during the off season. Last updated: 2007-07-31 12:00 AM

Got there about an hour and a half before race start.
Wandered around wondering what to do.
Got marked, setup my transition area and got my timing chip.
Jogged a little, very little, to warm up then stretched.
Swam a little to warm up before the pre race meeting at the beach.
