Swim
Comments: This was really only my 2nd OWS and it showed. I was a little anxious at the start but I knew that I would finish, so I wasn't too concerned. The water was really choppy and I had a hard time navigating and keeping to freestyle swimming. I probably swallowed about a gallon of lake water. Not pleasant. My goal was to finish in 30 minutes or less and I was able to do that. I know that there is a lot of room for improvement, but the swim went about as expected. What would you do differently?: I really need to just be more confident going into the swim. I hung to the back and should have tried to stay further up in the pack. I also need to work on my sighting. Transition 1
Comments: I probably spend too much time in transition, but I didn't want to forget anything. Ate one gel packet. What would you do differently?: Eventually I need to learn to ride with my feet on top of my shoes. In general, I just need to spend more time thinking about how to be efficient in transition Bike
Comments: I started out really comfortable and felt fast. I continued to feel good until about the halfway point where I started to feel fatigued. The second half of the race seemed to have more uphills and was into the wind. I think that I lost my focus on staying in the right gear and keeping my legs at a good cadence. I ate one Clif bar and one gel. I drank about 24oz of water. What would you do differently?: I need to stay more focused on gearing and cadence. My climbing was poorly planned. The gel made my stomach hurt a little. Transition 2
Comments: Not too much here. What would you do differently?: Again ... I could be more efficient in transition. Run
Comments: I started out feeling really good on the run. My legs felt strong after I worked through some calf cramping right at the start. I felt like I could push myself to 8.5 minute miles until my thighs started cramping at about mile 2. I pushed myself through another mile before I couldn't run any further. I spend the remainder of the race running until it hurt too bad, then walking it off. Repeat. Repeat. It was great when I could finally hear the finish crowd and I pushed myself one last time to run to the finish. I literally couldn't bend my legs right after crossing the line. What would you do differently?: Take in more salts. I think that lack of electrolytes killed me. Chaulk it up to a learning experience. Post race
Warm down: Found Lisa and parked it on her chair. I drank a couple of VitaminWaters and let the fire go out of my legs. What limited your ability to perform faster: Confidence, time in the saddle and cramping. Last updated: 2007-09-11 12:00 AM

Got up at 4:45 and ate a bagel and a banana and drank a cup of coffee. It took about an hour to get to the race. That put me further behind than I wanted to be. I had to get my timing chip, set up my transition area and visit the toilet.
Ate one gel packet before the race.
I didn't get to stretch or run at all (eventually I'll learn my lesson and get to a race early). I took a few strokes in the water and waited for the start.
