Pre-race routine:

Let's just count the number of "don'ts" I included in my FIRST (hooray) tri. 1) Nothing new on race day. New helmet, new wetsuit. 2)Don't eat late. Due to some avoidable and unavoidable happenings, I ate late. 3) Don't stay up late. Let's see... unable to fall asleep until 11:30. Awakened at 12:30 by 4 yr old crying, "my throat hurts". Look for Tylenol, none left and we're in a hotel room. Soothe her back to sleep. Fall back to sleep, 1:00 "MOMMY, my throat hurts" followed by crying in pain. I get up and drive to an all night gas station and pay $7.69 for Tylenol. Administered dose and somewhere close to 1:45 I fall asleep. Up at 4:45. 4) this probably isn't an official "don't" but I spent Thursday and most of Friday in bed sick with fever/nausea/myalgias. Always a great prerace plan.

Arrived in good time at the site. Clueless about how to set up transition so good thing I had 2 hours to scratch my head. Ate a bagel with PB and a banana, drank poweraide and coffee. Several trips to the potty. Since they close transition and I am seriously near sighted, I walked around with my goggles on from 7:25 until my wave at 8:30. I must have looked like a freakin' dork. The official said I could go back into transition and put my glasses in my bike shoes, but I was afraid of getting in the way of the oly people.

Event warmup:

Just walked around looking like a fish out of water. But I really enjoyed the scene.
Swim

  • 792 yards
  • 02m 27s / 100 yards
Comments:

First OWS except for a few minutes last week. First time in water with a wetsuit. I found the swim weird. It was shallow and people were walking. When I swam, I was immediately out of breath. I really enjoy swimming in a pool, but this sucked. I kept trying to just settle into a nice swim but it never happened. I freestyled some, breast stroked some and stopped quite a few times. Overall, I didn't really like this. I hope someday I can just swim it comfortably. Maybe the cardio problem has something to do with the cold? I dunno.
What would you do differently?:

OWS practice
Transition 1
  • 05m 25s
Comments:

Having never done this before, I didn't really have a routine. Even though I took a long time, it was fine for me. This was not about speed today.
What would you do differently?:

Have a routine.
Bike
  • 1h 01m 40s
  • 13 miles
  • 12.65 mile/hr
Comments:

I really liked the bike. Even though I go REALLY slow up hills, I was able to go faster than my usual the rest of the time. I actually passed a few people and they didn't pass me back. Have to admit, that was kinda cool. I really liked a big downhill followed by an uphill where I went fast all the way down and flew (relatively speaking) up the hill passing some women on the way.
I was really happy not to get a flat tire.
What would you do differently?:

I'm OK with my bike performance today. I'm sure I'll get faster. I would like to do something with my bike gears though, they make rubbing noises.
Transition 2
  • 04m 24s
Comments:

Again, this was not about speed for me today. It was fine.
What would you do differently?:

nothing
Run
  • 43m 52s
  • 3.1 miles
  • 14m 09s  min/mile
Comments:

I am not a natural runner, to say the least. I stuck with my run 5 minutes, walk 2 minutes plan and that allowed me to enjoy it. I didn't feel as different running after biking as I thought I would. Must use different muscles.
What would you do differently?:

Just more training. And I did carry my bottle of poweraide with me. I liked having it but maybe in a belt would be better. I can't drink out of those cups at aid stations, I tryed in my 5K this summer and almost choked.
Post race
Warm down:

Trying to walk with my two kids climbing on me and fighting over my bottle.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Training time. You have to understand, I was a total couch potato before this summer.

Event comments:

Of course this was the best race ever, it was my FIRST! Though it really seemed well organized to me. I like the scorethis! people. And you couldn't ask for a more beautiful day weatherwise. I am a happy camper today. I woke up today slow and fat and now I'm a SLOW FAT TRIATHLETE!

And to BTers, I love you guys. Thanks so much for all your support. Especially christris.
