Pre-race routine:

Woke up at 4AM and ate a bagel with peanut butter and a glass of cranberry juice. Did the all important #2, so I was good to go.
Found my friend Jay and set up near him. It was a good spot b/c I forgot to buy a ballon but our rack was next to a parking sign so finding it though trannies would be easy.
Event warmup:

Got in the water, did around a hundred yards easy. The announcer said the official water temp was "cold" but actually felt refreshing in my wetsuit, I'd even say perfect.
Swim
  • 13m 29s
  • 547 yards
  • 02m 28s / 100 yards
Comments:

Swam with the pack for about 2 minutes then got dropped. Kept drifting towards the right because whenever I sighted the pack would be to my left and no body was to my right.
What would you do differently?:

Work on swimming straighter(duh). Until then, maybe aim left about 15 degrees when I sight.
Transition 1
  • 00m
Comments:

T1 and T2 transition times is included with the bike. Got top of wetsuit off as soon as I got out of the water. Got legs out at transition area very quickly. A few of the guys who beat me in the water were still changing, and I transitioned faster so I made some time back. I put my MTB shoes on in transition so I can run with the bike and jump on, into the pedals fast and off I go.
What would you do differently?:

Remember to buy a ballon to help me find my spot. Ended up being a non-issue for this race because my set-up was next to a parking sign that was easy to see.
Bike
  • 34m 23s
  • 9.32 miles
  • 16.26 mile/hr
Comments:

Very hard to get in sports drink at beginning because my breathing was still hard especially after the bridge. Settled into nice pace on Sea World Drive and very little wind around Fiesta Island. On the return again through Sea World I had to be careful with the other cyclist and some wet spots. Went over the bridge seated and in the big ring so that was good. Clipped out of pedals and did a flying dismount and ran to my spot.
Transition 2
  • 00m
Comments:

Helmet and bike shoes off no problem. Race belt on. Visor on. Was a little concerned b/c this was the first time I did a whole race sockless and my feet were still dirty after the bike. Ended up being a non-issue on the run.
Run
  • 24m 39s
  • 3.11 miles
  • 07m 56s  min/mile
Comments:

First mile was hard. Legs felt better for miles 2&3 but because of the bridge the splits were pretty even 8:00 min pace. Had a really good kick at the finish but because the bridge was so close to the end, I didn't start it early enough and still had some energy left.
What would you do differently?:

Go a little harder after going over the bridge the first time.
Post race
Event comments:

Nice post race goodies, plus I got got to meet Lokelani McMichael and Katya Meyers. My awesome wife was there to cheer me on and take pics and brunch with friends afterwards is great.

I posted more pictures in my album!
