Pre-race routine:

Trying to stay warm as I had just finished up a 5k. Walked thru the expo, stopped at the Cliff booth had 2 shot blocks and 1/2 a bagel from another place. Only in California would you call this rain, most people would call this mist or fog. To me it was practically a downpour. ;) after munching and drinking water I realized I had to pee and didnt have much time. Waited in line for the pota potties and just barely made it to the start in time.
Event warmup:

Ran a 5k PR :D (Im going to see how many times I can get 5k PR into this race report, thats 2!)

Comments:

Well, I knew I wasn't going to PR this. not after running a 5k PR only 20 minutes before. My main goal was to use this as a training run to get my volume in for the day. I still can't believe the idea that I have to run two races to make up my days training. I can still remember when the idea of seeing 2 miles on the next days training schedule made me contemplate suicide. Today was a planned 9.3 and I was only a little bit scared. I haven't even been running a year yet.

So my goals for this were to NOT hurt myself. Take it easy and don't feel shame in walking. Now that I knew the course I was planning to walk the uphills. I had no time or pace goal and no pressure. After all I had just run my 5k PR ;) I was hoping to keep it sub 13 minute miles but no biggie if I didn't.

Mile one went well, ran it in about 12:05 and feeling good. Mile two was a big uphillthat I walked and ran fast down. Got her done in 12:10. Mile three I dont even remember. In fact, I hit the mile 4 marker and thought hey, this isn't so bad at all. I feel good and Im going to finish this thing. Up until this point I had a small amount of doubt in my head that I could really go the 9.3 mile distance in one day. Oh, I didnt mention yet here but did in the 5k (PR) report that I had gone on a 47 mile ride the day before.

After passing the mile 4 marker hit the biggest hill on the course and walked up it. It was getting cold. I was freezing cold and legs staring to cramp up. I tried to pick up the pace to keep warm. I hit the flat and started running and thinking WHERE IS THE MILE 5 MARKER!!!!!

Ahhhh, there it is! yay! I knew what that meant, one last uphill and then a solid downhill to the finish. Thought about trying to break 1:20:00 then thought better of it. I do NOT want to hurt myself and could tell I was at the limit of just about everything my body had to give. I promised gail I would take it easy. Oh, speaking of other BTers, there were tons of people out walking there dogs at this point. I stopped to pet every single one. Yanti, I know you would approve. I saw a golden retriever puppy, and after I was done petting him he tried to chase me. Awwwww. His owner was NOT into running :( He was so sweet, I could have stayed there all day and pet him.

Finally I make the last turn and start to run down hill. I don't really open up but I do start running at a good clip. I hear feet behind me. I see her coming. Hey, I could be fighing to NOT be DFL here. So I pick up it up a bit and put some space on her. Then I see the TNT crew out in full force cheering. Not for me of course. I look back again and see she's got a TNT singlet on and she is gaining on me.

Then I hear the sideline crowd again "You can take her. Faster! Come on you can do it"

OH NO THEY DIDN'T!!
I am nothing if I am not competitive. Ask anyone of my ex boyfriends...

I went into a flat out RUN like I was being chased by a crazy bear or something. It felt good, I dont think I've ever run so fast in my life. I felt like I was flying down that hill and it was awesome. Needless to say, she didn't catch me. There's a pic of that to be atatched! Thanks paparazzi parent stalker. In the finish hute she thanked me and said it was fun. I smiled and agreed. It's good she didnt catch me. Or I would have torn her apart limb from limb with my bare hands. Not really, but I probably would have a hard time being a good sport about it. Certianly not as good of a sport as she was. I know, Im a bad person and going to hell. :(

What would you do differently?:

nothing. T'was a training race and I ran it as such.
Post race
Warm down:

Kept moving. wandered back to the cliff booth for a shot block and part of a bagel. Then ate lunch with my dad.

Event comments:

Very fun race. Hilly yet pretty course. Lots of volunteers, well organized with nice goodie bags. Would totally do this one again.
