Pre-race routine:

As many of you know, this race almost didnt happen for me after a week of minor injuries and illnesses. Anyways , I was very happy to be in Tempe towing the line at this race but also was a lot more calm than usual. Had zero expectations, and the main goal of not overdoing it as I have a marathon in 2 weeks! I caravaned down with some friends, I saw the most depressing thing as we crossed the Scottsdale/Rural bridge, pretty pink tri bike had fallen off a rack and cars were swerving round it in the right lane, it had been hit more than once. Then to make it worse, up ahead was the car from which it had fallen- the other bike on the rack was trailing behind the car. Two people just had the worst start to their day! :( We parked, set up transition and then headed over to the tent set up by the tri group that I train with- this was a club race and a guy that has been helping me with my swim suggested I borrow a full sleeve suit instead of wearing my sleeveless (I figured he had seen me swim and probably knew that I needed the extra advantage of the sleeves!). My swim wave didnt start until 7:20 so I had time to get sunscreened, watch the sprint then squeeze into the wetsuit. Saw a lot of friends before the race.
Event warmup:

As I was waiting for my wave to start I realized something was missing, it was Jen. At every Tempe race I have done, we have started the swim together. Good news was that Paulette was in my wave :)
Swim
  • 27m 7s
  • 1500 yards
  • 01m 49s / 100 yards
Comments:

I'm putting down 1500 yards, the course was not 1500 meters for sure. The people I have chatted with decided it was about 100m short at least. Still even though I felt super slow in the water, I didnt suck too bad.
What would you do differently?:

I'm a decent pool swimmer now, I just have to get better in OW.
Transition 1
  • 01m 38s
Comments:

Slow! Had wetsuit removal issues and had to put my chip back on.

Bike
  • 1h 17m 14s
  • 27.25 miles
  • 21.17 mile/hr
Comments:

Funniest thing on the bike, there was a guy dressed as the Grim Reaper that I rode beside for a while, he had the full black costume on and rode a pink bike but he was trucking along! Afterwards I realized it was a local race director, he was cracking me up and yelled "death is chasing you" when he was behind me- funny stuff!
I loved coming to the corner of Rio & Mill because Jen, Aaron, Harry & Zach were cheering and so were some people from my neighborhood!
I did really well on the bike. The new tri bike felt a lot faster and despite the turns, I was able to hold a good pace.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing
Transition 2
  • 01m 30s
Comments:

Took a moment to make sure my shoes were comfortable and poured some cold water on my hat :)
Run
  • 48m 40s
  • 6.21 miles
  • 07m 50s  min/mile
Comments:

I wasnt sure what to expect ont he run, it was hot but after about a mile I realized I was doing OK. Able to keep the 8 min pace comfortably so I stepped it up a little bit. Dumped water on myself at every aid station and was happy to start seeing some of my friends out there. Did the first loop in 24:xx and set a goal of running the same for the 2nd loop. I could have pushed a bit more on the run but could feel my quads getting tight becuase of the concrete so decided to play it safe. Saw Tom near the end of the run and ran with him for a bit. Again, it was great to see thr Cool kids out cheering us on!
Post race
Warm down:

I ran behind a girl from our tri group and wasnt able to catch her at the end, however she had lost her chip in T1 and because we are int he same AG/swim wave and I finished right behind her, I spent some time trying to help her get her finish time verified. Not sure that it ever really got sorted out. I found some drinks, food and shade and hung out for about an hour before heading home.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

It was a tiring pre-race weeek, I had an ear infection, my son had been sick, etc etc however I dont know that it affected me too much. I think that if I didnt have the marathon in 2 weeks I would have tried to go faster on the run but I played it safe and I'm good with that!

Event comments:

The race itself went better than I thought- bike course wasnt as bad as I expected. Race schwag was kind of lame, and I do hope they post official splits. Luckily I wore 2 watches and have my own splits. I'd probably do it again esp if entering with a club/group.
