Pre-race routine:

Friday Aug.22nd: We (My Buddy and me) went to pick-up our Race Packages at noon due the number of participants (720 for Triathlon/ 120 Duathlon). He got the Bid # 191 and me the Bid # 190.

Saturday Aug.23rd: We prepared/packed all our stuff for the race...washed/lubed/tuned bikes...installed our Hed 3 C wheels for the Race and prepared all our beverages and placed in the refrigerator and freezer. Took a good lunch/nap and swam a fast/short 1/4 mile. Took an early dinner: Pasta and grilled steak. Loaded our bikes and bags with our stuff for the race in the car before we went to bed at 9 pm.

Sunday Aug.24th: We woke-up at 4:45 am. Took our usual pre-race breakfast: orange juice, small bowl with macaroni & cheese and my Soy Protein Shake (chocolate) and our multi-vitamins/minerals packages, Amino 1500, Glucosamine, Q-10.
Took our coolers/beverages and left from home around 5:20 am...and...got in Crandon Park around 6:00 am...the two lines at the entrance were a little long but moved fast...parked car...took our bikes and bag and went to get body-marked and our chips. Went to the Transition Are and placed our bikes in the rack. Our rack was the only one placed along the road to run in and out of Transition Area...cuz...there were a huge plant behind...I got the first space in the right side of the rack...and my Buddy next to me.
Put my helmet over the bike seat and my sunglasses over the AeroBar...my AeroBottle with Heed/water in the braket over the AeroBars. Biking/running shoes, hat, belt with Bid # and a frozen bottle of water under my bike in the grass.
When everything was set-up...I checked the exit/entrance in the Transition Area and where exactly my bike was. Went to the bathroom to do my last dump...LOL...Then I did sit over my Buddy's cooler next of our bikes and put my ankle support brace in my right foot...relaxed...closed eyes...did a mental visualization of the race.
Took a Strawberry Clif Energy Gel and 2 caplets of Endurolyte with Heed/water and took my cap/goggles/wax-ear plugs and headed to the Swim Area at the beach with other Clif Energy Gel and a bottle of water around 6:45 am...plain of time...the race starts at 7:28 am
It was a beautiful morning...not too hot...We were maybe in the 80o's F...but during the race the temperatures rised at 85o to 90oF.
Event warmup:

When we got at the beach in the Swim Area...We found out that there was low tide...but...very low...that we could see the sand bar next to the bouy where you have to round to head to the Swim Exit...And...Also We could smell a very bad odor...like sh***...It was disgusting!!!
We started to stretch arms and legs...then jumped into the water...the water temperatures were around 82oF...just right...and...the ocean was super flat...very calm...but the water was nasty...a lot of sea weed.
I swam till the buoy that was tied to a high pole to check how close was from the sand bar...and the space in between the buoy and the sand bar was too narrow and I said to me "Ok It will be interesting to swim in this point during the Race"...swam to shore...got out...took my second Energy Gel with water...and waited till the race started...in time like usual...they started with the Wave #1 at 7:28 with the Pro/Elite Male and Female and Physical Challenge...then the Duathlon started at 7:30 am and continued with the rest of the waves every 5 minutes...My Buddy was in the Wave # 4 and me in the Wave # 8 (Female 40+/Feamle Fat Tire/Athena/All Relays Teams) at 8:00 am. When the first 2 waves passed in between the bouy and the sand bar...we saw some people that ran over the sand bar and jumped into the water again...and the Organizers announced that run in the sand bar is not allowed and will be penalized...

Comments:

The Swim Course was like an escalene triangle...swimming from south to north/east to the 1st and 2nd bouy where we had to do a small round and headed to the exit at north/west from this 2nd buoy.
The beginning was a kick and punch combat to try to get at the bouy...never like this one...when I got to the bouy...off course...the space in between the bouy and the sand bar was too narrow and it was too crowd at the same time...by my surprise...I woman that was swimming next to me in my left side grabbed/pulled 4 times my arm...Damn!!! I started to kick and stroke very hard to get out of her...Also I was not feeling comfortable swimming in these nasty waters I felt like I was swimming in a huge toilet full of pee and sh***...that I said to me "Ok get out fast from this toilet before somebody flush it...LOL"...it was a very fast swim till the Swim Exit. When I got out I saw my watch and my time was in 8:05...My official time was 8:03...Good time even all the circunstances.
This time the Organizers included the running from the beach till the Transition Area in the T1 time...something that's more logical...cuz...You can see your real swimming time.....

Just when I got out of the water...I started running very fast and removing my goggles/cap/wax-ear plugs and put them inside my cap...It was a Super fast run...I passed all the people that beat me in the swimming...We ran maybe 400 yards till the Transition Area
Just before I got in the Transition Area and got water from the water aid atation next to the entrance to rinse the salty/nasty taste of my mouth.
It was an excellent transition I was the fastest (1st) in my Age Group like usual and 139 Overall...First put sunglasses/helmet and almost at the same time my biking shoes and run as fast as possible with my bike out of the Transition Area.

It was an excellent bike ride...I think the best that I have done in this Bike Course...the conditions were perfect...a little windy...but...nothing that you can say that will affect your performance...I passed a lot of people in the bike and I knew that Iwas the leader and only my best girlfriend Julie the fastest in the bike in our Age Group reached/passed me just before the Bridge...and other one that I don't know very well but after the bride...I was not worried cuz I knew that I was doing great and I usually re-finish in my run...
The climb at the bridge was perfect...to climb my friend "Rickenbacker Causeway Bridge" is always a challenge...but...I'm doing better and better everytime...and fast...when I got at the top...it's like the conquest of the Everest...LOL. Going down hill is exciting...getting speeds in between 37 to 40 mph....YAHOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!! till the U-turn and again to climb my friend "Rickenbacker"...but...when I got ot the top again...I said to me "That's it"...down hill again and got to the transition and did my usual fast bike desmount like the Pro/Elites but keeping shoes on...

It was other fast transition...this time I didn't have any problem like usual in the rack area maybe because my buddy was next to me...I was the 2nd fastest in my Age Group and 67 Overall of 720 participants...Wuaooo!!! I was impressed when I checked the results...not bad!!!
Changed shoes fast like usual...took my hat (inside the hat was my belt with Bid# and 2 caplets of Endurolytes) and a bottle of water...ran out of Transition Area as fast as possible...

Just when I got out fo Transition Area...while I was running I took the 2 Endurolytes with water...tossed water over my head and neck...buckled my belt with Bid# and put my hat...just after the exit of the Transition Area I passed the woman that passed me in the bike that is in my Age Group but I don't know her very well...and...then just befroe the U-turn at the mile 0.5 I saw my friend Julie that is the fastest in the bike in our Age Group...and I said to me " that's it"...I knew that I was the leader in my Age Group just when I reached/passed her...and just after I passed her I saw coming my eternal friend and rival Eileen...she is the fastest runner and usually the leader in this Trilogy Serie in our Age Group and I said..."Let's go Velo...You can do it...this race is yours"......and started to push more and more increasing my speed...keeping a good pace...and...I reach a woman that is one of the fastest in the Age Group 50-54...and...we stayed together during all the Run Course till the mile 3...that was great...helped me to keep an excellent pace...
After the last water station in the mile 2...I was wondering...Where is Eileen???...she usually reaches/passes me in between the mile 2 and 2.5...and I said..."Go Velo Go...You can beat her.." I start to push more and more and just before the mile 3 when I saw my Buddy and he started yelling and cheering me... and I sprinted but like never...super-fast...to the Finish Line...I was so Happy!!!... I knew that I beat her...Yes!!! for only 16 seconds even her running time was faster than mine for only 22 seconds...Wuaooo!!!

I got 1st place in my Age Group....

Post race
Warm down:

Just when I passed the Finish Line...a volunteer gave a bottle of water and other one took my chip...and just when the 50 years old woman passed the Finish Line...she came to me to Congratulate me...It was nice!!! and I told her Thanks!!! cuz she helped me to keep that pace and very motivated in this Race...
Went to meet with my Buddy at the Fun Water Area for kids...where all the Triathletes usually go after the Race to cool-off and wash/rinse our bodies...LOL

Event comments:

About the Swim Course...some people commented that the nasty water was cuz the descomposition of the sea weed other commented cause/effect after Tropical Fay...I really don't know...but...It was a real huge toilet...LOL
