Pre-race routine:

Ok, so against doctor’s orders I did this race. I have been on some serious meds and all week it had been a toss up weather or not I would do this race and it was a day before game day decision.
Event warmup:

Non... Sat and talked to some kid from the University of Notre Dame swim team. Stretched a little.
Swim
  • 32h 50m
  • 2640 yards
  • 1h 14m 37s / 100 yards
Comments:

Crappy swim! The day before at the pre-race meeting the "open water swim expert" advised stronger swimmers to keep a cell tower at there 12 o’clock and you would come right into the swim finish. He was way off; I sighted to the tower and came in almost 250 yards too far to the left. For those of you who did it, I ended up next to someone in a canoe telling me I needed to go that way->. So I backtracked to the finish. 268th over all and by best guess I covered around 2750 yards total. Brings my average down which I am happy with. The water got pretty choppy towards the half way part and I did swallow some but had no stomach issues after that.

Did anyone notice that the water got colder the closer you got to shore?

What would you do differently?:

Wore contacts and sighted using the finish rather than a cell tower.
Transition 1

Comments:

This was not too bad there was a 1K run between the swim and the bike to get us acclimated back to being on land. I could have gotten my wetsuit off a little faster but I can’t complain.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing...
Bike
  • 1h 11m 51s

Comments:

HILLY! There are no other words to describe this. I was very unprepared for the hills. The closest thing that I have to this is an overpass and that is miniscule compared to these hills. I knew that I would suffer and I was happy to finish. It was also really cool to have the helicopters and to see Andy Potts and Leanda Cave winning the race and to be on the course at the same time.
What would you do differently?:

Train more in hills.
Transition 2
  • 02m 9s
Comments:

Could have been faster... There were a lot of people exiting the bike course the same time it kind of felt like a log jam.
What would you do differently?:

nothing
Run

Comments:

This is where it got interesting. The run started off flat and smooth and I was turning out 7:37 for the first two then it went up a huge flight of stairs and they were really narrow. I could not pass anyone at all because there were people coming right at you from the opposite direction. The different type of terrain was great and did not bother me much. The sand ladder kicked my a$$ and my back and recent surgical scars were really hurting. Now I know why they doctors advised against me doing this race. I finished with hands held high... Happy and only 7 mins off of my goal time.
What would you do differently?:

Ran more cross country courses =)
