Pre-race routine:

began breakfast around 7:30 with dry cereal but didn't get to fully eat until 8:30-9. Finished flax cereal with milk and had small amount of pancakes. Probably ate too late
Event warmup:

none
Swim
  • 18m 22s
  • 630 yards
  • 02m 55s / 100 yards
Comments:

No time for warmup.
1st lap good, handled the crowd but went too fast got out of breath.
So on 2nd lap got very out of breath, had to breast, side and back stroke for a while, lost alot of time. Belly too full from breakfast, took in a lot of water. Also stayed too close to edge of pool entire time, didn't cut inner route well enough, added lots of time for that as well. Unable to complete full 750yds.
Didn't hear the time bell, kept swimming, had to be tapped by lifeguard to get out.
What would you do differently?:

Slower 1st lap for warmup, get pace.
Get head out of water to spot placement in pool, stay towards inner edge of circuit.
Transition 1
  • 08m 57s
Comments:

way too much time on T1 - spent time drying off, unzipping sleeves from vest, difficulty getting gloves on wet hands, getting socks on, neoprene booties, leggings, sleeves, etc.
What would you do differently?:

not bother drying off (it was raining anyway). have sleeves pre-unzipped. trying biking with no socks. Practice T1 at home.
Bike
  • 1h 06m 3s
  • 17.86 miles
  • 16.22 mile/hr
Comments:

Wicked headwind, then tailwind.
Averaged 12.1mph on way out then 25+mph on way back.
Seat not right height, had to stop a few times at start to readjust it.
Off & on cold rain was brutal.
Feet went numb.
drank only once. belly still off from breakfast
Transition 2
  • 04m 44s
Comments:

thumbs were numb, difficulty removing booties and shoes and tying sneakers.

What would you do differently?:

get quick tie laces for running shoes.
Run
  • 29m 54s
  • 4 miles
  • 07m 29s  min/mile
Comments:

felt goo overall. feet numb. ran with other guy, Paul, same age. Good pace the whole way, helpful to run with partner.
had 1/2 cup energy drink at beginning of run
What would you do differently?:

nothing
Post race
Warm down:

none

What limited your ability to perform faster:

insane wind. poor performance on 2nd lap of swim. long T1
Beginning of flu bug. Terrible sleep night before in Motel 6 (too cold, then too hot ?fever)

Event comments:

wicked winds and rain. Overall felt great at finish.
Great first race!!!
