Run
Comments: I PR'd. :) I lined up near the front and, as expected when the gun went off, everyone took off like a bat out of hell. I wanted to run this race hard, but I also wanted to run it smart. After about 20 steps of following the sprint I reminded myself that if I did race smart I would probably pass most of those people later or else I would be glad I hadn't tried to stay with them because I couldn't have kept their pace anyway. I felt heavy and slow this morning and it continued for the most of the race, but I was able to keep the pace I wanted for pretty much the entire race. I spotted Eileen ahead of me halfway through mile 2. My intention was to follow her, but I got lost in my own stride and pace and forgot about her until partway into mile 3. I had gained about 15-20 feet on her and focused on trying to close that gap some more. By the finish I had brought it down to maybe 10 feet, but I couldn't catch her. Mile 1 was a just a bit fast but not too much. And I think miles 2 and 3 were marked just a bit long. According to the pace calculator, I would have had to have picked it up to a 6:10 m/m pace for the last .1 which is not possible given how much it hurt by that point. What would you do differently?: Not much. I maybe could have paced just a bit slower for the first mile, but there's only so much room to be conservative your first mile in a 5k. Post race
Warm down: I felt a little like passing out at the finish. I made it over for them to remove my chip and thought my hammy might cramp when I put my foot up on the box. Then I walked it out on the block of street that was just beyond the finish line. Then went down and looked for STT. She ran a PR as well! Walked it out with her and then saw Ellen coming out of the finishing chute. Then jogged back just in time to find Whizzzz coming up on the finish line. Last was Kim and then off to breakfast we went! What limited your ability to perform faster: Not much. I ran a PR so I think this went about as well as it could. Event comments: This is a flat and fast course for anyone looking to run a good time. It's also a Chicago race, but decently sized--not one of the overwhelming 30,000+ runners type events. I've done it the last three years in a row and will likely be back next year as well. Last updated: 2008-02-20 12:00 AM

Ate a bowl of Cheerios with strawberries and soy milk, got dressed, brushed my teeth, packed up the rest of my bag and headed out. Met Laura (Whizzzz), Laura (StartingToTri), and some of STT's friends at the race site and hung out with them until the start.
Ten minute easy jog around the race area. Threw in a few strides.
