Age Group Rank = 63/205
Pre-race routine:

Ate bowl of vanilla yogurt with granola and one banana. Yum. Drank 24-oz. gatorade throughout morning prior to race start.
Event warmup:

No chance at warm-up due to race set-up. Dropped stuff off at transition, then got on the bus to go to ferry landing. Hung out at ferry landing for about one hour. Then boarded ferry, where we sat and talked for 30-45 minutes until we had to jump off of it.
Swim
  • 36m 10s
  • 2414 meters
  • 01m 30s / 100 meters
Comments:

Wore two swim caps. No squid lid, and felt fine.
What would you do differently?:

Would try to start as early as possible rather than waiting for my wave so I could avoid some of the course congestion that inevitably happens.
Transition 1
  • 06m 33s
Comments:

Chose to stage bag at swim-out so I could drop the suit, cap, and goggles and put on running shoes to run with shoes on for 1000m run to T1 area. Although time of T1 is long, it was actually a pretty good time, relatively. Could not believe how many people were walking after finishing the swim. Jumped from 726th place out of the swim to 516th place out of T1.
What would you do differently?:

Would put bike shoes on bike and run out of T1 barefoot.

Comments:

About 3/4 way through the race, I fell on a sharp turn that occurred after a long, steep downhill. Quickly recovered from fall, but scraped my left hand and left leg, and bruised my left hip.
What would you do differently?:

Would have pumped brakes to keep them from locking up. I squeezed the rear brake too hard, which caused it to lock-up. This lock up caused me to spill, because I could not make the turn.
Transition 2
  • 01m 11s
Comments:

Solid transition. Dropped a number of spots because of the quick transition.
What would you do differently?:

None.
Run
  • 1h 02m 16s
  • 8 miles
  • 07m 47s  min/mile
Comments:

Felt excellent throughout run, but did fight a side stitch early on.
What would you do differently?:

None.
Post race
Warm down:

Not much. Ate lots of food soon after finishing. Went to medical tent to take care of scrapes.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Leg strength. My leg strength on the bike is no where near my potential, and so I was continually passed on the bike. Felt very slow and weak on hills. Need more time in the saddle. Know that my time could change dramatically with even slightly better bike fitness.

Event comments:

Overall a great race. Timing well-run and easy to use.

Course: Did not feel like I was swimming that hard. Certainly the strangest and most exciting race start I've had thus far. Overall, nearly perfect conditions for this swim. Generally flat water, but had small, lapping waves, which were an annoyance but not a show-stopper. Only occurred in center of channel. No fog, so I could easily site off radio tower far in distance over the top of the city.

Sand ladder time= 2:51 (11:33/mile pace). Actually, did very well with sand ladder, but it was seriously tough, especially after having finished about 1/2 mile of sand running right before.
Course: Run course was primarily on trails, and filled with hills. Lots of up and down, but what was lost on uphill could be made up on downhill. At times, narrow areas were back-up and had to wait in line, including tunnel near the Golden Gate bridge and up and down stairs. The up and down course made the last two miles of flat, hard trail feel amazing. Felt like I was flying by people during those last two miles.
