Pre-race routine:

Let’s just say my pre-race routine left a lot to be desired. I was laid off on Thursday (along with 300 others) from the place I'd been working since I graduated from college. I'd spent over 5 years w/ the company. A few of us felt the need to "celebrate" our new found free-time on Friday evening with enough whisky to get an army platoon drunk.

After sleeping through most of Saturday, I met up with my sister and a large group of her friends for dinner. It was her 30th birthday and her friends were all ready to get crazy. I only stayed for dinner, but....dinner was at 9pm, I ate a TON of sushi, and I had a few beers (and a shot of Patron). I made it home by 12:30am and finally got to bet about 1am.
Event warmup:

I woke up easily enough and found the park without a problem. It was a pretty drive out through Fenton and Ortonville. I arrived at the park sometime around 6:30am. I had the guys in the Fraser Bikes tent adjust my brakes and inflate my tires. I thought that was great! I'd been having issues with my front brakes rubbing on my tires and hadn't had a chance to take my bike in to be looked at before the race (see pre-race routine).

After getting my race packet, I found the BT'ers and chatted with them until the olympic races started. Jumped in the water for a bit, but didn't really get much of a warm up in besides that. I felt calm and confident.

We started in the water about waist deep. I got myself to the far left and towards the front. Once we got going, I realized I wasn't towards the front...I was IN THE FRONT! I started off really strong. I felt good and was really excited that I was almost leading the pack.

About 200 meters in, I realized that I'd gone out WAY too hard. I was getting tired FAST. And I was starting to get that panicky feeling...which I'd never, ever had before during an open water swim. From that point on, I had to complete the swim using a combination of freestyle and breaststroke. It was totally disappointing. I started off so strong and was at the front of the group, and I had to watch as a ton of people passed me.
What would you do differently?:

Swim at my own pace...I started off way too fast. And modify my pre-race routine.
Transition 1
  • 03m 30s

We had a long run up a hill to T1. The wetsuit got stuck on my timing chip. I went sock-less...I'd been training with out socks for a few weeks leading up to the race.
What would you do differently?:

I need to hustle more in T1. I can recover while on the bike...I don't need to take it easy to catch my breath in transition.
  • 46m 50s
  • 12.43 miles
  • 15.92 mile/hr

I enjoyed the bike! They had you going down a few hills on the way out which got you going pretty fast...and allowed you to recover a bit after the swim. I thought the hill at the end was a bit over-rated. I was able to get up that thing without too much trouble. I think riding on my bike that had brake-rubbing issues leading up to the race helped a ton! And I'd been spending a lot of time at Island Lake too...which, for me, is a fairly hilly ride.
What would you do differently?:

Push it harder the entire time. The ride seems to go by so fast...and they always say to race your strength. I wouldn't really say that biking is my strengh, but compared to running...
Transition 2
  • 01m 22s

I pretty much come to a complete stop at the white line when getting off the bike. I was able to jog to my rack but ended up going down the wrong isle, which cost me some time. Other than that, all I had to do it take off the helmet and put on my racing belt and baseball cap.
What would you do differently?:

Make sure I know where I'm racked and hustle more.
  • 34m 59s
  • 3.11 miles
  • 11m 15s  min/mile

I still suck at the run. It's a combination of jogging and walking. It's embarrassing.
What would you do differently?:

Really, really, really focus on the run before my next tri. I would place SO much higher if I could complete the run portion without having to walk. I can do it...I just need to force myself to run more and run longer.
Post race
Warm down:

Stretched, re-hydrated, admired the good-looking and shirtless tri-for-life guy (so hot!)...and watched as the rest of the BT'ers finished up.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

My pre-race routine (see above) and my lack of run training.

Event comments:

The race results on site were all seemed like a lot of the people that got awards probably didn't actually place in their AG. And it took FOREVER for them to update and get the results on their website.

But...I DID win a wetsuit in the raffle! That was AWESOME!
