Pre-race routine:

My parents drove me up to KC Saturday afternoon. Went to packet pickup and listened to some pre-race stuff. Stayed with my grandparents and we all went to On the Border for dinner (pre-race ritual for me). Got home and was sooooo full, I fell asleep watching the 10 o'clock news. But when I went to bed, my dog was all riled up and refused to go to sleep. He was up and down all night, grrrr.

Got up at 5:30 a.m. and we were out the door by 6:15, right on schedule. Ate a gluten free bagel in the car.
Event warmup:

Set up my transition and rode my bike a little ways to get into a lower gear before the start. Didn't really know anyone else there so I found my parents and chatted with them. Pretty soon it was time for the red swim caps to swim the ~200 yards to the starting beach. This is a wonderful warm up! Chatted with a bunch of people; some were first-timers and others were old timers at this course like me :)

Red caps up to the timing mat! F25-29 were starting with the M16-19 group (I think) and there seemed to be a TON of boys in there with us. I was ready to rock this course.

Comments:

Since I was so ready to rock, I started off fast. I mean, this was a SPRINT right?? Turns out I started a little too fast, and was immediately out of breath. Started breathing every stroke and never really stopped.

I was near people left and right a lot, but no one was ever directly in front of me. Me and one girl in particular were the exact same pace the whole time, except she was just ahead of me. I didn't have enough to pass her, but when I tried to draft off of her, I kept touching her feet. So we just swam side by side the whole time. I think she did beat me out of the water by 3 seconds though :(
What would you do differently?:

I don't know. Every time I don't start so fast out of the chute, I write in this box "start faster out of the chute." But when I did it today, it just sky-rocketed my heart rate too fast, so I guess I need to find a middle ground.

Comments:

Nothing unusual here! Pretty long run from the swim exit to my assigned rack. Nothing I can do about that.

What would you do differently?:

Nada.

Comments:

I knew this was a hilly course, but I always forget *just* how hilly until I get there. Uuggh. At least this year I did not dis-mount my bike for any reason! Yeah!

I feel like my IMKS training helped me a bit... I found myself passing not only the first-timer types, but also some guys who looked like they should not be getting passed by a girl! I was trying to keep track of the girls in my AG passing me but I didn't know who was on the short course vs. long course. Me and one girl in my AG kept passing each other, probably 4 or 5 times! Finally she rolled up next to me and asked if I was short or long course. I was short and she was long. We laughed about how we didn't have to worry about each other anymore, LOL.

Finished the bike and had NO IDEA I was second in my age group for this leg. Usually I am in the bottom half. This was just bizarre! My mom said when I came in, hardly any bikes were racked... guess we know why now. Still have no idea what happened to the other 18 ladies. I mean, I only rode 16.5mph! Strange.
What would you do differently?:

As always, more hill training. All though I believe I was pretty prepared for hills due to IMKS training.

Transition 2

Comments:

Really rocked this transition. From '06 to '07 I added five seconds, so I was determined to shorted it up this year. I think I succeeded.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing.

Comments:

I really wanted to smoke this run. Really, I did. But as soon as I started, my heart rate shot up. Bad. It took me about a mile (of the 2.4 mile run) to get warmed up and for my heart rate to settle down. Kinda deflated me a little, but I just kept going and tried to push as hard as I could.

I passed a guy in the 20-24 AG and said as I passed "you're not gonna let me pass you are ya?" to which he responded "Absolutely!" LOL. Then at an aid station he blew by me and said the same thing. So as we were nearing the finish line, I kicked it in and said "UH OH!" as I got next to him. He laughed, and then I started sprinting. Then so did he. It was hilarious! Of course he beat me but that was funny as hell. (pics of this in my album)
What would you do differently?:

Speed work. That is all.

Post race
Warm down:

My Dad was right there and he was so excited about my 4-minute improvement from last year. I thought I might beat my time by more than that, but was still excited about it. Got some water and soda for the 'rents, and just hung out waiting for the awards ceremony.

Looked at the posted results and saw I was probably 5th or 6th in my AG but had no idea how many girls were in it all together. When the awards ceremony started I won a gift certificate from ROAD ID, cool! I already have one, but Tom needs one so that's good. I clapped and woo-hoo'd for everyone who won, and got a little glum about not ever winning an award. Told myself I just need to get faster and maybe someday I'll get one.

I got hot in the sun, so sat down with my parents under a tent in the back. They finally got to calling names for my AG and they started with 5th place... whoa there must have been a lot of girls in the AG. Then THEY CALLED MY NAME! I was so surprised! I ran up to the table and Tim DeBoom gave me my award (featured pro... how cool!). I was about to cry running back to my parents. This was my first hardware EVER... so stoked. WOW!

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Not a whole lot today. Feel good about the race, especially after placing in my AG.
