Run
Comments: The flagged off was for both the Ultra distance and the 10.5km Corporate relay. Some of the 10.5km participant was quite nice to wish me luck for the race. You can tell that the 10.5km runners were sprinting hard while the Ultra Marathoners were taking their own time to sustain energy for the rest of the run. For once, this is truly a Singapore Marathon. No runners from Kenya or other African countries was sighted. After the half way mark where all the 10.5km runners U turn, the road was quieter. The stretch along Coastal Road was quite surreal. While running, I saw Donald who was among those who lost our way at Bedok Reservoir during one of the familiarization run. We were running all the way until just before ECP, where I decided to continue at my own pace. The first toilet I saw along ECP, I decided to take a break. The spicy mee goreng that my maid cooked in the afternoon plus the CLA that I took before the race. I continue the run to F2 carpark but I didn't see Steven who was supposed to be there to pace me. I suspect he must have thought I was way in front because if he sees Donald, Donald would have said that I was in front of him. True enough, that happens. We managed to link up near the Seafood restaurant later. The pace was good and I thought I felt the run was great. After the U turn at ECP I realised that I was quite way ahead of some of the faster runners from MR25 and SG Runners. I even saw Teo Ser Luck walking the stretch even before the 20km mark. I begins to worry if my pace was too fast. But Steven assured me that it was alright. Saw Marienne running in the opposite direction towards the U-turn. From ECP to Bedok Reservoir, I managed to sustain a good pace with a bunch of runners who were all doing the same pace. However, after the climb up the staircase for the overhead bridge across Bedok North Road, my energy start to run low. The distance between Bedok Reservoir and Loyang seems to be so long. As I was approaching Loyang, some of the runners behind me start to catchup and passed me. As I reached the finishing line of Loop 1, I was relieved that one loop is over. I finished the first marathon in 5hrs 40mins. I picked my Special Needs bag and start to change my shoe. There were many others in front of the tent who literally sit there and not moving. I wonder if they are planning to continue with the 2nd lap. I decided to start after a bit of rest. The 2nd lap was the most challenging of all races that I have participated. First of all, I tried to start running but the leg does not seems to respond. I felt quite demoralised already. I was walking all the way until the start of the Coastal Road, Francis whom I met during the last Familization run asked me what I plan to do for the rest of the run. I told him that "I seriously don't know what I am doing or planned to do". I was just too tired and sleepy by then. I had to fight hard the zombie monster. My stomach started to churn. The taste of another Power Gel is starting to be quite revolting already. He suggested running 400m and walking 400m and its seems to work to cover the Coastal Road. When we reached ECP, I couldn't run anymore. I started to feel pain on my ITB. Donald who was behind me, was now in front of me but later I managed to catch up with him with Francis at F2. I was sleep walking for the entire stretch of ECP. Marienne past me at the Lagoon. I wished that I had some food to give me much needed energy back. I was tempted to drop by MacDonalds to buy some food to eat but I didn't. After the U-turn Francis decided to run. I start to walk with Donald but later I lost him cos he went to MacDonald to eat. He catch up with me at Kembagang. When I reached Bedok Reservoir, I was tempted to give up but Donald was insisting that we can make it. I was suposed to see Steven and Christian at Bedok Reservoir but they were no where in sight. I have arranged to meet them there since 5:30am but I reached Bedok Reservoir at around 8am. During the 2:30hr, they were looking high and low for me. Even went to the finishing line thinking that I might have finished. They managed to track me through the organizer. haha. I saw them again at Tampines Ave 9 at the turning point to Pasir Ris. What a relieve to see them. I update them about how bad the rest of the 2nd lap was. Steven calculated that if we were to brisk walk, we can still make it for the cut off time at 11am. He estimated based on the pace that we walk and distance to cover. With that I start to increase my pace for the brisk walk for the rest of the remaining distance. Christian left when he reached his car at the car park in Pasir Ris. Donald didn't want to join us with the brisk walk and decided to fall back. I managed to overtake a few people including Francis who was way in front of me. As I picked up speed, I managed to do a bit of running for some distance. When I finally reached the end point, I had a great sense of relieve that it is over! I finished the race in 14hr 07mins. I got the finisher t-shirt, the towel and medal. The legs start to feel ultra sore. I couldn't even walk properly. All I wanted was just to go back home and rest on the bed. Just before we left the place, I saw Donald running to the finishing line just 5mins before the cut off time. So happy for him. What would you do differently?: Do more night run. Post race
Warm down: Took a cab back home, had my shower and I was literally flat on the bed. I spent the rest of the afternoon sleeping. I had porridge for lunch as I was not able to eat anything else. I got up at nearly 7pm to have dinner. I felt better after a dosage of Ibuprofen to reduce the muscle soreness. I am still tired and really wonder how I would be able to work tomorrow. But I guess I don't have much choice. What limited your ability to perform faster: Felt sleepy after 2am. Couldn't run. Felt ITB pain after the 1st marathon. Every run felt painful thus has to walk instead. Last updated: 2008-06-29 12:00 AM

I was down at Changi at around 6:45pm to deposit my Special Needs Bag and Baggage to change after the race. Then, went over to the counter by Republic Polytechnic to have my urine and saliva test done for the research project that they are doing for Ultra runners. Saw a couple of friends at SG Runners counter and trying to stay calm before the race starts at 8:30pm. In fact, the race was flagged off at 8:25pm by Teo Ser Luck.
Did some stretching.
