Swim
Comments: Decent swim with a large starting group tried to go out in the middle of the pack. Got the crap hit and kicked out of me and run over a few times. You would think someone would adjust thier course a little after hitting you a couple of times, so goes life. Chop going out made it hard to breath and caught a couple of mouthfuls of water, the current was also a bit strong. The way back in was much better and got to surf a couple of waves to help out. The start had a nice sandy bottom but over a 100 yards where we came out has some rocky areas to get through. The first time I got tripped up, so I was a little cautious getting out so not to jam a toe or twist an ankle. Over all I hit my estimated time goal pretty close. Swim course was well marked and plenty of bouys to keep you on tract. Also a lot of safety personel in the water which made me feel good. What would you do differently?: Do a little more open water swimming and help improve my time Transition 1
Comments: Did pretty good in T1. I am blind without glasses so I wore contacts for the swim, had to peel them out when getting to my bike. I can not wear them when biking because they dry out and irratate my eyes. I also washed my head and face down with a water bottle to remove the saltwater and change out my shirt, I also put my shoes on before getting on the bike. After all that stuffing my gear into the T1 bag for transport and heading out. What would you do differently?: Nothing different for the circumstances Bike
Comments: Had a great ride! got up to a comfortable pace quickly and rode good. Seemed to be passing a lot of people and the people passing me were usually younger and on high end tri bikes. My Trek 1500SLR road bike did great. I worked the gears well with only a couple of blown shifts and had one blowout on the front after hitting a rock in the road at mile 38. Did s quick change and got back to business. The last four miles coming into the city I took it pretty easy on and was sitting up. You had to choose your line to avoid rough road and potholes but they had a bike lane coned off which made it much safer and easier than I thought it would be. Averaged better speed than I had predicted What would you do differently?: Nothing Transition 2
Comments: Good transition had an easy spot to find and had scoped it out well the day before when dropping off my T2 bag. Running shoes went on easy and had stuff in bag layed out well. What would you do differently?: Place a bottle of spray sunsceen it bag. Ended up with a bit of a sunburn from the sunscreen wearing off. Could grab the spray and apply on the move and pitch on the way out of transition. Run
Comments: good run stayed slow and steady throughout. I walked the hill at Angell both times. I did not see anyone running it. Towards the end of my run I saw a physically challanged racer coming up the hill on Angell, It was a struggle for him to even keep moving, and I thought if he can do it so can I. What a kick in the pants for motivation to keep going at that point. When I hit the last aid station there were a lot of kids there helping out, I poured a cup of water on my head and they all yelled to see if I wanted a splash, I said sure and next thing I know I got hit with above 100 cups of Ice water! I though I was back in the swim! I had a strong finish and was not totally wiped at the end. What would you do differently?: do better and improve my time over longer distances Post race
Warm down: after passing the finish and getting my completion award and picture, I got some water and some solid food (man can not live on gel alone!)I did some stretching and recovered my bags and bike. Went to a friends house and showered and went of to dinner. A margarita never tasted so good! What limited your ability to perform faster: I hit my time marks I had predicted almost perfectly. I just need more experience and time training. Event comments: Great race and well organized. Many volunteers and safety personnel. I never felt as if I were in danger at any of the intersections or in traffic. Course well marked and organized, and I would highly recommend this race to anyone wanting to do a 70.3 Last updated: 2008-07-14 12:00 AM

I was able to have my camper close to the race site and stayed in that Sat night. Made it nice to only have a 5 min drive to get there. Went to bed at 9:30pm and slept good until 2:00am when I woke with the prerace jitters. Got out of bed when the alarm went off at 3:30am. I got up Showered and had a Steak and egg breakfast with coffee and a banana. Started to hydrate also. Got down to the site at 4:35 and got body marked and set up my T1
Did a lot of stretching and tried to remain loose and calm. This is my first 70.3 and only my second race ever, so remaining calm was tough
