Swim
Comments: I have to stop swallowing water, especially water that contains goose poop and dead fish. I think subconsciously the fresh water tricks me into swallowing it. Up until the 1000 meter mark, I really drafted well. I lost the toes and then fell about 30 seconds behind. I am considering switching to a farmer john wetsuit. I've used the full sleeved wetsuit for 3 races now, and I'm sure I'd swim faster if my arms were less restricted. Transition 1
Comments: Rank: 134 I'm slow in the transitions. Bike
Comments: Cycling is still my weakest of the three disciplines. Although, considering I didn't do any bike training in the previous 3 months, I'm really happy about my time. My water bottle drinking setup also worked awesome. I took a Propel (Gatorade) bottle, put a zip tie around it, and used a couple of velcro straps to secure it to my aerobars. Then i put an elastic around my stem and the mid point of the bottle to stop it from swaying back and forth. For a straw, I bought some 17" long straws online. It all worked perfect. Ask me for more details if you're reading this and are interested. I could take a drink when I want. Or sometimes to cool down I would just spit the water on myself. Transition 2

Comments: I know I have it in me to run faster. After the bike, I just couldn't get my feet moving. Around the 2 km mark, I was feeling overheated. I made the choice to take off my top, and I even took off my HR chest strap. You know things are bad when HR data no longer has value. I was willing to risk getting DQ'd for violating the "no bare torsos" rule. It wasn't until the 9th km that I started feeling better. I also put my top back on before the finish line. What would you do differently?: Wear a better more breathable top. Post race
Warm down: Drink water, stretch, put on warm clothes. I should've stuck around for my 3rd place age category ribbon... but after doing a bunch of races this year, I have stopped expecting to win in the M25-29 category. Event comments: Awesome race. Put me down for next year! Last updated: 2008-08-06 12:00 AM

August long weekend...Saturday afternoon, walk downtown to Avis to try to rent a car, all rented out until Monday. Walk to National, same deal. Walk to Enterprise, closed. Closed!?!? Don't they know I have a race tomorrow! Phone grandma, "Grandma, I know I don't visit you as often as I should, but can I borrow your car?" Luckily she still loves me.
Started packing up the car at 5 pm. I am a compulsive over-packer. I think I brought 5 different pairs of socks, 2 pairs of goggles, 2 pairs of shorts that I don't even use during races, 2 tops, 2 pairs of sun glasses, and enough food for 3 days even though I'm gone for less than a day.
Finally get on the Tsawwassen ferry at 7 pm. It was my first time taking the ferry across in a car. It's pretty simple. My only complaint is that on my way there and on the way back I got stuck on the bottom deck. I would rather be up on the higher deck with the windows.
9 pm, Arrived at Elk Lake parking lot. The volunteers were still busy setting up the transition area. I turned the back seat into a bed and prepared to settle in for the night. It was the luxurious stay at the Honda Johnson. It's much more economical than paying $120 for a night that involves way too much anticipation and way too little sleep.
I thought I was going to be the only one sleeping in a car, but an hour later another car arrived with 2 guys in it. Their car was a hatchback, which looked like a really good car for sleeping in, because the seats in the back fold down, and there is no trunk.
It wasn't bad at all. For the comfort, I had about half a dozen pillows and a couple of blankets. But there is another aspect, which is a sense of freedom. It was also nice being right there at the race. There was no worry of not getting there on time, I was already there, and I had a great parking spot!
It wasn't until next day, after the race, that I read in the rules that camping overnight is against some bylaw. Oh well, I'm just a parking lot terrorist.
Even though I woke up at 5:30 and the race started at 7 am, I managed to dwindle away the 1.5 hours. I found myself racing to put on my wetsuit and then running to the beach. I still had a few minutes to spare though.
After Cultus Lake, which was freezing cold, I've stopped doing swim "warm-ups".
