Swim
Comments: Thought I was having a good swim all 'round, but you wouldn't know it from my time. Swim fitness is probably lacking...not enough training since Vineman, really. Swimming through seaweed jungle just prior to 2nd buoy not my favorite tri swim moment. What would you do differently?: Train more. Transition 1
Comments: Took advice from someone who'd done this course before and--a la Vineman--ran with bike all the way up hill coming out of transition. What would you do differently?: Not put on Garmin? Settings were screwed up, so it was nearly worthless to me today. Bike
Comments: Hoped for faster time here, but--really--I just don't train enough hills. There's almost no stretch where you can really open up and cruise here (and where there was, there was a little bit of headwind). On the plus side, really only 5 or 6 people passed me during the ride and I passed quite a few (many probably doing the sprint). What would you do differently?: Train hills. Transition 2
Comments: This is pretty typical for me. What would you do differently?: Nothing really. Run
Comments: Good run for me...esp. on hilly course, mostly trails. Won my age group on the run by a full 2 1/2 minutes. What would you do differently?: Nothing, really. Only one person passed me the whole run. This was my third fastest 10K time, open or tri. Post race
Warm down: Hung out with my wife and some friends who did a relay in the sprint distance. Packed up. Grabbed my 3rd place AG medal and boogied to another event. Took 1st in AG in sprint at this race last year, so 2 for 2 on podium finishes in this event. What limited your ability to perform faster: Under trained since returning from Africa in August. I was surprised at the podium finish, given that my time was almost 20 min. slower than my Oly PR Event comments: This is a friendly local event on a relatively challenging course (esp. given the number of first-timers). Amenities were slimmer this year than last...esp. lacking in food post-race (last year a Scout troop was selling burgers and hot dogs...this year only bananas, orange slices, and--I guess--PB&J). Got up at 4:40am and had a Nutrigrain bar. Drove 40 min. to the site and sat in car in line waiting for park gate to open (late). Got registered and got a good rack position. Chatted with other athletes a bit more than usual.
Ran a few strides. Calf was a bit tight, so stretched more than usual. Got in water and swam a bit.
