Pre-race routine:

Woke up at 4am (1/2 hr before my alarm was to go off). Got up and had some coffee, an EAS shake, some peanut butter toast, and some water. The car was already packed, so I headed off to the race site at 5am.
Got down to Tempe and set up my transition area and went looking for everyone. (I was racked near Rick and Josh. I saw Jenna, who directed me to where Brian was. I later ran into Jen, Tanya, Jerry, Sally, Lisa, Cody, Jot,.....)
Event warmup:

I should've stretched, but i was feeling pretty loose. Rick and Jot were in my wave, so I pretty much just hung with them.
Swim
  • 20m 7s
  • 1056 yards
  • 01m 54s / 100 yards
Comments:

I was barely in the water when the gun went off. Had quite a swim just to get to the bouys - -no time to even 'warm' my wetsuit. That would stay with me the wole race - - I had to pee the whole time and didn't until post-race.
Back to the race, I started swimming pretty well until we got under the bridge. There was a huge logjam of bodies and getting through was difficult. I have never been hit by so many breaststroke kicks. Once I got through, I had a pretty good swim to the first bouy. I was a little wider than I wanted, but corrected before it cost me too much. The rest of the swim was pretty good except for another logjam towards the end. Got out of the water and had the strippers get me out.
My goal was to be 19:xx or better. Despite the start and the logkams, I was 20:07 - - I would've easily made my goal.
What would you do differently?:

Work my way to the front of the wave and get in the water in time. I think they needed to allow more time to allow more people to get into the water. These waves were going off too quick.
Transition 1
  • 01m 59s
Comments:

Ran to one too many corrals, but luckily there was room on the outside to get back. Got to my area, saw SportyJ standing nearby, and got ready to ride. I took my bike the way I had just come from and ended up getting blocked in by a guy who had pulled his bike out, but was not ready to start riding yet. I yelled 'Come On' and he started moving. I quickly ran by him and headed to the bike out.
What would you do differently?:

Not go down a crowded aisle.
Bike
  • 1h 31m 45s
  • 31.5 miles
  • 20.60 mile/hr
Comments:

Pretty happy with my bike leg. I averaged over 20mph for the first time in a race. I'm getting better and was able to pass some folks. Robot and I rode for a while, leapfrogging one another through traffic, but in the end, i just couldn't hold his pace. There were a few areas where it was crowded, but for the most part, I was able to ride free.
What would you do differently?:

I pushed myself for part of the ride, but I don't know if I push myself hard enough. I think I'm afraid that I'll burn myself out for the run. I suppose I need some longer bricks to find out exactly what I can do.
Transition 2
  • 01m 49s
Comments:

Got to T2 at the same time as the girl racked next to me. We both got in and got out.
What would you do differently?:

Not much here, pretty happy
Run
  • 53m 39s
  • 6.55 miles
  • 08m 11s  min/mile
Comments:

I started my run and the HIM pros raced by me on their second lap. They ran by me like I was standing still. I felt strong running. My first mile was 8:05 and I was hoping I could keep it right there. My next 2 miles were 7:44 and 7:56 - I was ecstatic. I then had an 8:25, but didn't feel like I had slowed that much. I told myself to take the next mile easy (8:16) and then start to turn it on. My mind and legs were willing, but something didn't get through. I could find that gear and ran mile 6 in 8:26. After that, I was able to turn it on and passed about a dozen people from the bridge to the finish. Would've liked to have been faster, but I'm still happy with this.
What would you do differently?:

Run faster if I could!
Post race
Warm down:

Saw my wife and kids just before the finish and met them after I hit the slip and slide. Waited around, cheered, and watched lots of folks finish both the Quarter and HIM races

What limited your ability to perform faster:

My 'A' race was 3 weeks ago and I was just doing this race as a fun way to end my season. That race may have taken something out of me, but I felt like I was well-trained for this.

Event comments:

Pretty good race. The swim start was not good this year and the bike course is always a little crazy in Tempe, but the event is pretty well run.
