Overall Rank = 15/248

Age Group Rank = 2/18
Pre-race routine:

Woke up at 4:30AM. Took a quick shower just to get the 'sleep' off. The hotel we stayed at was about 1/2 hour away. This turned out to be a blessing because I was able to eat my breakfast bar AND drink some hot tea on the way to the race. Stopped at a McDonald's to use the toidy right before we arrived at the race venue. All empty! Yay! One of the first athletes to arrive. Bike racks weren't assigned, so I took a prime position in the center/middle and made myself comfy.
Event warmup:

Use the bathroom twice. Once again, all empty. Many athletes were extremely late arriving and since my wave (all age groupers) was set to go off first, the race director let us swim a bit in the frigid lake. I would have loved to have my wetsuit on, but I would have been one of 3 or 4 people wearing one. I swam about 50yds for a very quick warm-up which served to do nothing more than make me coler.
Swim
  • 12m 9s
  • 820 yards
  • 01m 28s / 100 yards
Comments:

Considering that this was an all female event, I was suprised at how aggressive the age group wave was at the start. I guess I was expecting butterflies and puppy dogs like at the Danskin. I also had to stop and tread water 3 times in order to empty my right goggle! This swim was 'ok' but I think I could have done better with a better start and no water leakage.
What would you do differently?:

Need to be more aggressive at the start. Need to really tighten up goggle and make sure to have a clear lens pair for overcast situations.
Transition 1
  • 00m 43s
Comments:

There was actually a T0 and T1 in this race. T0 was a run from the beach to the transition area (I'd say about 0.3 mile). I completed that in 1:57. T1 was the normal stuff done in transition. I had a really good T1 time. No nonsense. Just slipped bike helmet on, shoes on and off I went. No sunglasses b/c of the rain. Very cautious at the mount.
What would you do differently?:

Some dirt got stuck in left cleat and I had to bang it out twice before clipping. Need to learn how to get dirt out in one swoop. Also need to learn how to pedal up to speed without clipping in and then clip in after I'm moving.
Bike
  • 35m 3s
  • 12.43 miles
  • 21.28 mile/hr
Comments:

I swear that I don't believe the time. My computer showed the course as being 1 mile short which put me at an average of 19.3. Taking out all of the slow running in/out of transition, I expected an average of around 20mph. Not sure if I totally believe the 21.2 mph stuff. If it's true, it sure is nice! I did place well in the field, so no matter what the numbers truly are, I'm happy about that!
What would you do differently?:

Work on mount/dismount.
Transition 2
  • 01m
Comments:

Slow! I wasted time monkeying with my shoes (forgot to open the strap on the left shoe, so it didn't come off easily). Wasted more time fiddling with running skirt.

There were a mere 4 seconds between me and the girl who won my age group. All four of those seconds were lost in T2! She did it in 49 seconds, I did it in 1 minute.
What would you do differently?:

No more running skirts! No more extra fiddling with shoes. Need to learn how to unclip and pedal with them on top.
Run
  • 22m 51s
  • 2.75 miles
  • 08m 19s  min/mile
Comments:

Holy blisters, Batman! OMG... my feet are raw meet! I ran without socks in wet conditions and in shoes that obviously don't fit well (this is the 2nd time they have given me blisters). OMG!!! Pain!!!

My pace felt slow, but split showed otherwise. Do I trust it? Once again, in the overall scheme of things, but run is the weak link; however, it is getting better.

Sprinted with Morgan (who won my age group by 4 seconds) to the finish line. Met her afterwards. Nice girl. Nothing hurts more than losing your age group by 4 seconds.
What would you do differently?:

SOCKS!!!!!
Post race
Warm down:

No real warm-down. I had to tend to my blisters. My shoes were full of blood. It was disgusting.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

In the swim... my goggles were probably the most limiting factor. I had to empty them three times and did a heck of a lot of swimming with a "right eyed wink" going on. On the bike... I did well. I could learn to corner better, get a bit more aggressive with my position AND continue to train my quads. With the run... well, I was in severe pain the entire time! That was definitely limiting.

Event comments:

Buttar really screwed up the overall times. The race director assured everyone at the awards ceremony that while the overall placements were correct, many of the times still needed to be pieced together. My friend was awarded first place in the Novice division... only to find out the day after that she was really 6th! Can you imagine being handed an award saying that you won your division in your very first triathlon only to have it taken away the next day???? Very, very poor stuff on the part of Buttar. They had an obligation to get those results right!
