Swim
Comments: I enjoyed the swim so much. My anxiety left as soon as I got in the water...then I was hungry. I wished I had my sandwich right there in the water. I didn't feel too pummeled in the water. Just a few kicks and leg grabs. I listened to all the advice and didn't stand until I was on the ramp, although I did catch some silt with my hand on the last few pulls. I knew it was fast. I had my new Garmin in my swim cap and it missed about a min of the swim, but recorded .87. Not too bad. HR didn't work in the water. I didn't think it would, but it was wishful thinking. What would you do differently?: Nothing. Great swim. I even went out towards the edge to get more current. Transition 1
Comments: Long run (or shuffle in my case) to transition. Went through the shower which felt great. Got moving at a decent pace, but didn't feel rushed. Ate another shot blok. What would you do differently?: Get to transition area faster from the water. Bike
Comments: I have not trained on enough hills, that's fer sure. I should do more of that. I had to make a judgment call in the morning. I always said I would not race in the rain. It's not worth that increased risk to me. I can't afford to crash. So it wasn't raining, but the roads were wet. I decided to do it. I can't say that my slowness was even due to the conditions. I wasn't being overcautious. I even hit 29 mph on a downhill. What would you do differently?: Learn to ride hills and go faster, although I was okay with my ride today. Transition 2
Comments: Okay transition. Grabbed my phone and hit send on the text I had prepared to my family letting them know I was on the run. Forgot my hat, but it wasn't too hot or sunny anyway, so that was okay. What would you do differently?: Not forget my hat. Run
Comments: Crappy run. I suck at running. I ate a whole Luna bar as I headed out. I was starving. I walked up that steep hill out of transition and walked a bit on most of the up hills. I got a few boosts during the run. The first was seeing my kids as I entered the park. I almost cried. They were so excited. I was also so jazzed to see Jonah. I caught him on Harlem hill. He paced me for a while and made forget I was running. Then I saw my kids just before the finish. They started to run with me as we planned, and as one of them did with their dad last year, but they got stopped and told they couldn't run with me. That was crap, especially since the video of her with her dad crossing the finish played over and over at the expo. If they didn't want people to do that, they shouldn't be showing the video. I didn't really appreciate seeing my ex all over the screen when I was at the expo either. What would you do differently?: Run central park. I need to do it. I will do it. Post race
Warm down: Met up with my family and BF and walked to my parents car. I didn't stretch at all. I paid for it later. I got terrible leg pain in my right leg about an hour later. I have been rolling it out with a stick all night, and it seems to be improving. We went for a great brunch together and then I took a much needed nap. What limited your ability to perform faster: Poor training for 3 weeks leading up to the race due to busy work schedule and some life stresses. I should have done more hill training, both on the bike and especially on the run. Event comments: I had a great time. This was the race I went to last year that inspired me to do this crazy sport. I wanted to go head to head with my ex, but he deferred due to a foot injury. I think he was just scared of losing to me. I have no doubt I would have beat him. His bro finished with a time only 7 min shorter than me, and he was a competitive swimmer. I crushed my ex's time from last year by 20 min. As much as I have been mentally drained recently, I think I got a good boost from this race. I am really proud of what I accomplished this year. I never would have thought I could ride a bike that fast. A year ago I didn't even know how to ride a bike at all. I am not a natural athlete, and I will never be really fast at any of the 3 sports. My body is not built for that, but I can get better...and I will. Last updated: 2008-10-30 12:00 AM

I had my usual inability to eat, both the night before an morning of. I always got like that before exams in my medical life, and it's just as bad in my "so called" athletic life. I try to eat, but I just have no appetite. I also get insomnia and took a nibble of an Ambien so I did get 4 hours of sleep. I hired a car service for the morning so I wouldn't worry about catching a cab at 4:30 am. That was a good move, even just to relax my mind. I got to transition just after it opened at 4:30. It left me a lot of time, which I liked, except for the rain. Thank goodness I mooched a garbage bag the day before on advice from BT. It kept my bike dry through the first downpour, and then my whole transition area dry after I had set it up and the next downpour happened. I took it easy then walked to swim start with Kristin (lazymarathoner). I tried to eat, but still couldn't I managed to get down 3 shot bloks, and a banana. Not much food over the last 12 hours. Not good.
None. just watched others swim. I particularly like watching a few people flip on their backs and just float down the river.
