Pre-race routine:

got into bed too late but fell asleep pretty easily and had a good sleep.

up at 5am; dressed, ate my regular pre-race breakfast of Cheerios and yogurt smoothie; on the road by 6am, arrived by 6:30. Racked my bike and dropped my stuff in TA and then went for body marking and chip pickup. Set up transition, got my wetsuit on to my waist, and made the long walk to the swim start; got my suit fully on and zipped, cap and goggles on, and then it was time to swim
Event warmup:

none
Swim
  • 35m 30s
  • 1500 meters
  • 02m 22s / 100 meters
Comments:

first 500m to the first turn was really hard: I was swimming into some chop and kept getting a mouthful of water; had to break from FS a few times to collect myself. After the turn things got a lot better. I had a terrible time seeing the buoys and always felt off course.

Because of the long run back to TA I decided to take a moment in the shallows to get the wetsuit off; this time was included in the swim time.

Run a bit faster
Bike
  • 1h 19m 28s

  • 18.09 mile/hr
Comments:

The bike was much harder than I was expecting and it felt uphill into the wind both ways. I was hoping to do between 19 and 20mph but ended up doing just over 18.
What would you do differently?:

push harder?
Transition 2
  • 00m 50s
Comments:

it was planned that my race was over when I was done on the bike (heel injury, no running) so I quickly racked my bike, dropped my helmet, and ran to the timing mat in my bike shoes

What would you do differently?:

not have a heel injury, be able to run!
Post race
Warm down:

hit the porta potty, some food, pack up TA, go home, lick my wounded pride

What limited your ability to perform faster:

a bit of a freak out in the first part of the swim, very poor ability to follow the swim course
