Swim
Comments: Slow swim - I'm not a strong swimmer so I started off slow to make sure I paced my breathing, but I didn't pick it up enough to have a decent time. I also struggled to stay on course :( Transition 1
Comments: I put my shoes and socks on before I got on the bike. When I went into the transition area I was wishing I had a bucket to sit down on. I looked over and saw my sons bucket and thought bingo! Since he was a few waves behind me I figured I could sit down and use it before he came into the transition area. It worked and as I was heading out he was coming in! What would you do differently?: Take my own bucket to sit on! Bike
Comments: Bike was challenging. I had done this race last year and the hills burned me out. I was working on a higher cadence to try to save my legs for the run. I was a bit surprised by my average cadence though - 97 rpm. This may have been a bit too much as I was feeling pretty dead around mile 20. Knowing I still had a big hill coming up at mile 23 I backed off a touch to try to recover. Made it through the big hill and finished strong after that. What would you do differently?: Not sure - maybe try to edge my cadence down some. Transition 2
Comments: I took off out of the transiton area without my race belt! My belt was jostled and was not where I put in in the transition area. As I came through it never registered when I didn't see it! I ran about 1/4 mile before I realized it. Since I wasn't sure what the penalty was and I didn't want to risk a DQ I turned around and went back for it. This added a little over 4 minutes to my run time! What would you do differently?: Make sure my race belt is tucked tightly with my shoes! Run
Comments: Ran pretty well considering I added about 1/2 mile to the course! Even with the extra distance I still finished in 56 minutes. I was pleased with that. Legs were dead, I was dead, but manageed to keep going. I was glad when it was over! What would you do differently?: Make sure I don't run any farther than I have too! Post race
Warm down: No real warm-down. Crossed the line and enjoyed a bottle of water and one of the ice cold towels. Walked up and down the sidewalk cheering on friends and other racers. Then I relaxed in the shade and had a few oranges. Event comments: Challenging course. Fun race. The point to point transition areas were easier the second time around - can be challenging the first time you do this race. Last updated: 2009-02-04 12:00 AM

Up at 4:00am to give enough time to travel to the race. Had a bowl of cereal and a cup of coffee.
Had a peanut butter and jelly sandwich and a bottle of gatorade at 6:00am.
Got in the water and swam some before the race to get used to the water temp and warm-up. Water was 76 degrees and I did not have a wet-suit. Overall the water felt pretty good.
