Swim
Comments: Overall, I was satisfied with my swim. Not happy, but satisfied. When the volunteer told me my lane, I thought the previous swimmer still had a lap to go, so I just stood there for a few seconds. When I didn't move, he yelled, "go, NOW!" which started me off a little flustered. I put my seed time as 12 minutes so I obviously bested that, but I know I can do this sub 10. I just freaked out a bit at the beginning and relied on too much breaststroke. What would you do differently?: Not freak out? I would have been much faster swimming more free, but I felt my heart rate soaring so I decided to slow it down to leave something for the bike portion. Transition 1
Comments: Took WAY too long in T1, but it seemed like time had stopped. I swam in a bathing suit, pulled on shorts, shirt, gloves, socks, bike shoes, helmet and then double and triple checked everything. This was my first transition ever, so I think I was just super nervous that I'd forget something. What would you do differently?: Practice T1 more! Turn on the Garmin on the way out of T1. Bike
Comments: I was so happy about the bike. I've been riding about 11 or 12 mph in training around my town, but on a mostly flat and mostly open course I was soaring. My family almost did find me to cheer me on because I was so far ahead of the pace that I told them to expect. My heartrate was super high this whole ride, but I did not feel like it at all. It was either just pure adrenaline, or somehow getting the chest strap wet messed it up. I am going to guess in was just the rush. What would you do differently?: I forgot to turn my Garmin on until I hit mile 1 which was a bummer. Also, I had to stop at one intersection because the cop directing traffic didn't wave me on, but then a rider behind me just sailed through. I guess he did see me, but I erred on the side of road caution and stopped at the red light. Not much I would do differently, I was really happy with this ride. Transition 2
Comments: This was really just a hand off to my sister who was doing the run. What would you do differently?: Not much, she needed to stop because she dropped the chip in the hand off. Run
Comments: The run was in complete sun and by this time it was near 90. My sis is normally a 9 min/mile runner, but was nursing a knee injury and was very disapointed by her time. I was just happy we finished and didn't care about the time at all. I ran in the last 1/4 mile with her. What would you do differently?: Be well and not injured! Post race
Warm down: We walked around and grabbed some drinks. Grabbed our stuff from transition and left for brunch at our mom's house. Event comments: Overall, I was very happy to get through our first effort safely and under our 2 hour goal. We will both be individually competing at our next race in July, and it was great to do a practice run and find out what we need to work on. I was mostly thrilled that I still felt good at the end of my bike - I didn't gasp across the line, and I felt like I still had plenty of reserves left so than I can do the run next time. I did this race as a RELAY with my sister completing the run leg. It was my first tri race, and I really just wanted to "tri" it out without completing the whole event.
Woke up at 5:30, ate a banana and a mini bagel, met sister at 6:15, and we were at the race site by 6:45. Set up transition and listened to the pre-race briefing at 7:10.
None - a little stretching poolside as I was waiting for my wave.
