Swim
Comments: Wanted to play with the big dogs on the swim. Got a great position to start and people were all up on me for like the first 10 minutes. I didn't back down though. I just sped up any time someone bumped into me or hit me. Tried 2 stroke breathing, and it worked out pretty well. What would you do differently?: Not trip TWICE getting out of the water. And not looking like a sea beast emerging onto land in my race picture. GRAWWWWWW! Transition 1
Comments: I tried doing the whole starting with shoes on the bike last year, and it didn't work out so well. I found that it's more important to get a snug fit in the shoes for a 3 hour ride than to save 20 seconds. What would you do differently?: Nothing, I'm happy with this T1 time. It was 13th in my AG and 209th overall. Bike
Comments: People were drafting off me like a mofo, I must have pulled a string of 7 people for like 25 miles. I'll put up the picture to prove it. I used Bob's bike for this event, his P2C with HED3 race wheels. Around mile 13 I started hearing fap-fap-fap-fap-fap.... and my heart just dropped. I thought my race was over. I had no spare because they were tubulers and wouldn't know what to do even if I had. Luckily it wasn't a flat. I have no idea what it was. It continued to make other random noises thoughout the race keeping me on edge of worrying about a flat. Thanks to the police for telling us to slow down for the bump at mile 20ish. That thing was a freaken flat trap. Bottles were strewn everywhere from people hitting it too hard. Me and this other guy my age talked back and forth a few times. We joked whenever we hit a bridge that it was the highest point in the race and to down shift. Only took one bottle with me since there were 4 locations on the course. Good move. I threw my bottle at the second station and picked up a gatorade. I did the same at the 4th station. What would you do differently?: Slid the seat all the way forward. I was too stretched out. If I was more compact, I could have hammered. Transition 2
Comments: Meh. 29th AG and 476th overall. I went down the wrong isle, doh. Helmet off, bike shoes off, socks on, shoes on, yanks up, hat on. I studdered and ran back to get my gatorade bottle out of my cage, why I don't know. I ran toward the port-a-potties in transition, but they were already occupied. Ran on out towards the exit, took a drink from the bottle and threw it in the grass not more than 50 feet after the exit. What would you do differently?: Not done all those stupid things as described above. Run
Comments: Ice in the hat at water stops. Perfect for keeping the body temp down. Worked really well I thought. Started off really really easy, just like I should have. Short strides, quick turn over. Really had to pee at this point. Last year I stopped at mile 4. So I figured I could make it to there again. Got to mile 4 ran into the port-a-pottie. and pee'ed for seriously a minute and a half. I had so much liquid in me from drinking the choptank and gatorade on the bike. Passed my peeps wished them luck. Also passed a bunch of Iron Crabs that I exchanged "GO CRABS!" with.... such a weird phrase. Left calf cramped up on me with 4 to go. Dropped a few loud 'F' bombs and 'S' bombs and was like 'no no no! not now. not now!' And just freaken trucked though it. Modified my stride to compensate and hopefully stretch it out. 1 mile to go they both sieze up on me and I say NO, and continue on to the finsih. I had to at least break 5:25:00 I told myself. What would you do differently?: Salt stick. I was a freaken salt shaker afterwards. Post race
Warm down: Massage? :) A really bad massage. Actually I wish that is something I didn't do. What limited your ability to perform faster: Bike position. Event comments: Major thanks goes out to the Cambridge Police. My bag with all the stuff that I didn't need in transition (keys, wallet, cell, clothes) was outside of transition. Some kids tried to run off with it while I was racing, but got caught by the police. They stored my bag in the swat truck until I recovered it. Last updated: 2009-04-02 12:00 AM

Eat a whole pizza the day before, wake up at 4:30am, bagel and jam, coffee, check the weather, the rain has passed. Set up bike gear in transition. Helmet on top of aero bars, glasses in helmet. Tape a bunch of gels and shot blocks to the frame.... like 7 packets. :) Pump up tires, bike shoes in front, running shoes in back with socks rolled up inside. Running hat on top of running shoes, so I don't forget it. Completely forgot to put a bottle of gatorade on the bike.... luckily I remembered 1 minute before they closed transition.
warm up? Ummm... the swim? :)
