Swim
Comments: Putting on my wetsuit I put my leg in and ripped it all the way up one side of the leg. Luckily I was already toying with the idea of not wearing a wetsuit but since most people were wearing them I initially decided I would. But it ripped and so I went without. I felt great with my breathing and sighting. I was in a good rhythm, I knew I had to move my arms faster. I was getting discouraged as I was getting passed at times as if I were swimming backwards. By my pace time was better than previous races that were shorter distances so as a personal goal I did better. I also wonder how much of a disadvantage not having the wetsuit caused me. There only other thing was the seaweed kept getting my tangled and that broke my focus a few times though I didn't panic. What would you do differently?: lubricate my feet better before putting on my suit. Move my arms faster. I don't practice "race pace" enough I think. Transition 1
Comments: Easy transition with now wetsuit Bike
Comments: I went off road on the second technical turn that I wasn't expecting. The long flat section really started to kill my lower back, I was actually relived for a climb after it which I did mostly out of the saddle. Leapfrogged with one age grouper which I eventually pulled away from in the last 5 miles. Otherwise was passed more that I passed other people I did increase my pace 1 mph over my last race of only 15 miles so I was proud of that. What would you do differently?: Ride more! And preview the course. Transition 2
Comments: Tried for the first time getting out of shoes on bike, it worked really well for me. Fumbled for a second in getting my running shoes on but otherwise pretty fast transition Run
Comments: I was looking forward to the run to see how much ground I could make up. I passed 22 people and didn't get passed by anyone. That always a confidence booster. As far as pace I am please with it given I finished 27 miles on the bike. I ran consistently and just picked people and passed them. What would you do differently?: Add in some 1-2 mile burst and see how my body responded. Post race
Warm down: Ended up talking to someone right after the race so basically stood in place and stretched. Did some more light stretching after I got my car packed up. What limited your ability to perform faster: Practice and drive Event comments: There were gnats in the park where this was held that were absolutely out of control. Luckily there weren't an issue during the race but I ate a few hundred easily afterwards and before. Last updated: 2009-04-03 12:00 AM

Left my house about 5am and had about an hour drive. Got there in plenty of time for packet pickup and to set up my transition area with ample time to spare. Went down to the dock and looked over the swim course, and familiarized myself with the transition area.
Jogged about 1 mile and stretched on a bench enjoying the views of the Chesapeake.
