Swim
Comments: After Augusta and over the last two weeks I have done little in exercise but maybe 3 hours worth. I was spent. My left Quad feels half pulled and my left calf is still seriously tight, so much so the Navy showed up and wanted to see what a real knot looked like! I knew I should not have done this race with B2B coming up but I wanted the experience of Pinehurst since I paid for it...and so off I went. Next year I will learn to spread out the races and race each race full hearted! Not fool hearted! Started near the front and managed to stay there until faster swimmers pulled away at the first bouy. I felt I swam well on this one but my time showed I did not. Sighting was good until the home stretch when I rounded the last corner bouy. Once there, I could not see the bouys, I just followed other sswimmers and I had remembered the anouncer saying we could actually come inside the home stretch bouys. I ended up keeping them on my right and some folks managed to swim inside and cut down the distance. What would you do differently?: Simply more swimming. I have done little since the last 2 and upcomming races are wetsuit legal, and 2 with current. I have focused my time on biking and running, what little time that is. With Louisville in 11 months, I will be in the pool a lot over the winter. Transition 1
Comments: Ran up the hill and as I pulled my left arm out and left my gogles and and cap inside the sleve, learned this on BT. As I was stripping I put my glases and helment on. Shoes on, quick check and I was off. 1/2 ran with bike, people in front of me, mounted bike well and go. What would you do differently?: Practice this, get faster, have it down to a science. I would like to get this down to 1:20-1:30. No way it should not be. Bike
Comments: I immediately knew I should have been at home and not here. My quad and calf were hurting and I wanted to give it a push and see if I could race or if I needed to lay back and savor the moment. I did ok till about mile 16, at that point the right leg was doing 75% of the work and at times on any hill I was simply letting the right leg do 90% of the work. I passed lost of people but not to be proud of it, I was passing higheer AG's and teenage girls, so it wasn't like I was doing anything spectacular. I knew the "hills" were coming and I just pushed on the best I could as to not hurt myself so I could be ready for B2B. But me being me, could not just lay back and damn if I didn't start pushing hard again. It was like there were two of me, as all my life, the "go hard or go home" or "planner guy" Harold. I had to reighn in "go hard or go home" and get back to the planner guy so I would have legs for Wilmington. What would you do differently?: Regardless of legs issues, still I need to lose 30 pounds to get lighter for climbing hills and simly not have much of a load on the bike. But hill work is a must and Louisville will offer plenty, so guess what I'll be working on this winter..... Transition 2
Comments: Feet out of shoes while riding, dismount while riding, leg was tense and I forgot, OH my left leg is a problem. TO late, Im on one leg, my left, and OHHH a cramp out of hell, but didn't fall off, ran off and the ran into T2. Then problems, I could not lean down to get my shoes on, cramps. If not for ny neighbor having a bucket to sit on, I would still be in transition trying to get my shoes on. What would you do differently?: I dismounted well. Ran with the bike, Did everything right but simply cramped and couldn't get shoes on. again, races to close together and no recovery period. Run
Comments: This was not going to be pretty and I knew it as soon as I rounded the corner and hit the first hill. I knew I was going to take it out easy but my left calf and quad was hurting by now and I was concerned so I turned the volume down along with any expectations. I would run, then walk some, the run again. The left calf cramped some as well. I didn't want this to be miserable so I made it a mental game and said run to the mailbox then walk to the light, and so on. Gave a gel to a guy cramping along the way. On hills my HR would spike big time and this is a product of no hill training vs leg problems so I can't blame it on the leg. Several times my HR beeper went off at 183 and I walked to get it back to 170. Thus, I need to run hills much much more! Again, guess what I'll be doing this month and up till Louisville, RUNNING HILLS. What would you do differently?: Run hills. Rud distance. Run Faster. Run more. Lose weight. Post race
Warm down: Walked some to losen up. Water, 2 hot dogs, and a pepsi. What limited your ability to perform faster: Simply doing races to close together. But weight, swimming ability, and lack of running hills. Event comments: A challanging course. It leans to bikers and runners of course. a good race thoigh. downside, walking from parking in the dark is dangerous. Bikers came by walkers several times in the dark, close calls I thought. SetUp Events should have lighting if folks are walking this far in the dark. Overall volunteers did awesome, a good event! Last updated: 2009-04-04 12:00 AM

Up at 4:15. Oatmeal, bananna, water, OJ. Hit the road at 4:35 to Pinehurst. One cool thing on the ride down was the sunroof open, stars were bright and abundant and at one point I was looking up (with my eyes on the road to) enjoying the view and Tom sawyer by Rush was thumping, AWESOME!
Ran about 3/4 mile, slow and fast. Biked about 1.5 miles, slow and fast, and got the bike in the right gear for mounting.
