Pre-race routine:

Woke up at 4:30, had oatmeal, water & coffee. Organized everything and drove up to Ruidoso.
Event warmup:

Some running & stretching.
Swim
  • 09m 41s
  • 400 yards
  • 02m 25s / 100 yards
Comments:

It was very crowded. Passing other swimmers was a challenge, but I managed to pass quite a few. I had to breathe every stroke on my right side at the beginning just to get my breathing down on the first couple laps. After that I was able to alternate sides.
What would you do differently?:

Not put my goggles on upside down. Other than that I think that swimming in a crowded pool almost on top of each other is good practice for open water swims.
Transition 1
  • 00m 47s
Comments:

T1 was actually a run to bike transition, since the run was the first leg. I chose not to wear my bicycle gloves, since sometimes I have a hard time removing them. (I think that was a good decision)
What would you do differently?:

Nothing, this transition seemed to go well.
Bike
  • 42m 11s
  • 10 miles
  • 14.22 mile/hr
Comments:

I felt that I did really well on the bike leg, but I don't think my average bike pace was what I was hoping for >15 mph. I passed a good number of people and I usually never do that, so I know that I'm getting better on the bike.
What would you do differently?:

I need to work on keeping cadence at least 80 rpms. Sometimes I forget to pay attention to that.
Transition 2
  • 01m 49s
Comments:

T2 was coming from the bike going to the pool to the swim. Unfortunately, I forgot my flipflops and I ran barefoot to the pool. It was a good distance to the pool and there was a lot of gravel. (I think this is why my T2 is kind of slow)
What would you do differently?:

Bring flip flops or just run with my running shows and leave them by the pool.
Run
  • 33m 42s
  • 3.5 miles
  • 09m 38s  min/mile
Comments:

I felt like I didn't do as well on this leg of the race. I don't know if it was because I may have started out too fast or my lack of hill/trail running. Probably a combination of both. I think this was a little difficult anyways.
What would you do differently?:

Do more trail running and some speedwork.
Post race
Warm down:

Walked around.

Event comments:

This was a fun race and I liked the changes that they made to it this year. Different route & swim changed to last leg. The course was well marked with a lot of volunteers. This is one that I would do again.

Course: This was the last leg of the race. It was in pool & we would swim down & back, then under the lane line. Because the pool had four lanes, we had to get out after the first 200 yards and do another 200 yards to make up the distance. Then run outside to the finish line.

Course: This was a very hilly run that went onto a trail. I would say it was challenging & that's a good thing. The trail we ran was around a lake. It was well marked & the trees provided a lot of shade. The scenery was beautiful.
