Swim
Comments: Started out well, i.e., first 150 yards were fairly good, then I started to tire for some reason (possibly the cold water and I couldn't seem to catch my breath). I turned over and did a few backstrokes in order to relax, which helped me to finally catch my breath. Within a minute I was able to get back into a freestyle rhythm and finish. What would you do differently?: Not sure why I tired so quickly? Could have been swimming for the first time in my wetsuit, the cold water, and a lot of bodies in such a small space? Not one of my better swims at this event, but nevertheless, I made it out of the water alive. Praise the Lord. Transition 1
Comments: Brutal transition. Could not get my wetsuit off my feet. I think it was stuck on the timing chip? Very frustrating. What would you do differently?: Relax and not get so frustrated just because my wetsuit would not come off. Everything else was fine. Bike
Comments: Felt like I had a very good bike ride for a change. Good rhythm and felt strong throughout. Probably could of gone a little faster, but we'll never know. What would you do differently?: Train more on my bike than just once a week. Now that the days are longer, I think I'll try to get a short hill ride in during the middle of the week. Transition 2
Comments: Good transition. Not in any hurry so everything was smooth. What would you do differently?: Nothing Run
Comments: Lower back was a little tight for the first mile, then pain seemed to subside. Felt like I couldn't get going. Legs felt very heavy. What would you do differently?: Need to train by running hills. Post race
Warm down: Walked, stretched, and drank a lot of water. What limited your ability to perform faster: Training. 1st triathlon of the season so I know what I need to work on. Running is going to be my number one priority, followed by the bike. Need to do a lot more hill training both on my bike and with my run. Event comments: Lots of volunteers who were very friendly and cheerful, easy check in, and the people in the race (competitors) were very supportive. Very organized race. One down, three to go. Woke up at 0515 hrs; breakfast consisted of a non-fat berry yogurt and some Ensure Wild Berry. A cup of coffee for the hour and fifteen minute drive to San Dimas. No traffic (or CHP) made the drive enjoyable. Check in was very organized.
Stretching, followed by some time in the water prior to my wave. Water was cold for me, even in my full-length wetsuit.
