Pre-race routine:

I had a really bad pre-race routine. I came up to Manassas the night before with 5 other friends from Liberty. My buddy had just finished a 50k that day before and was riding up with us, so he kind of delayed our start. I got up the next morning at 6 (mistake 1), which is pretty late considering the 7:30 start time. I then had a croissant(good) and glass and a half of OJ (Mistake 2) at 6:30. We got to the race fine and I had to very quickly get used to the whole race scene of a triathlon. I had only read about this stuff. So to have to rush everything and be helping people was a mess. So overall, i'm gonna have to make sure I'm there earlier, and not have any OJ.

Event warmup:

I sprinted from my car to the packet pick-up a couple times, that was my warm-up. I'm not sure having more time would have helped me here. Since this was my first triathlon, i'm not sure what I would have done anyway. I guess I'll figure all of that out as I go. It's worked so far right?
Swim
  • 06m 11s
  • 250 yards
  • 02m 28s / 100 yards
Comments:

The water was very warm. Since this was a reverse tri, the swim was last. I was really slow in the swim. I mean considering it was the last event I kind of expected it, but 6+ min for 250? I'm a better swimmer than this. I just lost focus there at the end. Plus it didn't help that I was wearing shorts that I wore during the run and bike.
What would you do differently?:

Actually own a piece of gear that might help me in the swim. My hips sank so low during the swim because of the drag from my shorts. I would definitely remember to stage my goggles so I can wear those during the swim. That wasn't a big deal though.
Transition 1
  • 00m
Comments:

This was a reverse tri, so it was from bike to the pool. They also included my T time w/ my swim so overall it was 6:11. I was pretty quick going from the bike to the pool, no hiccups to speak of.
What would you do differently?:

I would definitely remember to bring my goggles. But, considering that this was my first tri, I didn't realize I didn't have them until midway through the swim, lol.
Bike
  • 14m 12s
  • 4 miles
  • 16.90 mile/hr
Comments:

This is where I got hammered. Even though I performed well, I still showed pretty poorly. I guess I'll be living on my bike for the next couple months. It doesn't help that I didn't own a bike until about 2-3 weeks before the race. I honestly had <20 mi on the bike.
What would you do differently?:

not much, I feel I did pretty well considering my training. I just focused on my breathing and keeping a good cadence, which served me really well. I was only passed twice, both position changes.
Transition 2
  • 00m
Comments:

Reverse tri, run to bike. It went well. I don't have clipless pedals, so it made my transition very easy. I was probably in the transition area < 30 sec.
What would you do differently?:

Not much, it went well.
Run
  • 08m 12s
  • 1.4 miles
  • 05m 52s  min/mile
Comments:

When the whistle sounded I was in the middle of the pack, and so I had to really weave to jump out of the mass of people. I swung out wide and let loose. At first I was a little worried about my HR, b/c it seemed a little high for the pace I was at, so I found a pack in the front I knew I could run with. Let my HR settle-I think it was the adrenaline, and then finish the race. I found a guy that finished just in front of me and I tagged about 10 yds behind him for the rest of run. I knew I could catch him, but I didn't want to implode for the rest of the race, so I left well enough alone.
What would you do differently?:

not a whole lot, it went well.
Post race
Warm down:

I had some of the food they had laid out, and then went to find my friends still on the course.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

ha, probably my training. My bike performance was good even though my training was abysmal. I think my biggest setback was not having the money for a bike until late. Dang it! Stick it to the man!

Event comments:

Seeing as how it's my first, take it with a grain of salt. It seemed fine, but then again, I didn't really show up for any of the activities surrounding the race, including the awards ceremony.
