Swim
Comments: Eh. It was an ok swim, but nothing to be excited about. What would you do differently?: I would say "skip the swim on Saturday," but I know that, if faced with the same situation, I'd still swim. Transition 1
Comments: This was a run from the beach to transition, so that's why it's so long. I thought this one went really well! I put my sunglasses and helmet on while stepping into my shoes, then bent down to fasten the velcro and took off. What would you do differently?: Nothing Bike
Comments: Stupid hills. Every time I went up a hill, I started wheezing worse. Most people who passed me did it on the hills or just after them. It did make for a challenging course, though. What would you do differently?: Train on hills. Transition 2
Comments: This went pretty smoothly. What would you do differently?: Nothing Run
Comments: I left transition right behind a girl in my age group, and I was determined to catch her by the end of the run. She was about 10 seconds/mile faster, though, and slowly inched away from me. I was still determined to catch her with a sprint at the end, like I'd miraculously find some energy somewhere and she wouldn't be able to keep up. Pffft. She beat me. I had a good run, though! I didn't realize I was going as fast as I was, since guys were passing me like I was standing still. My only limiting factor was my breathing. I was wheezing pretty badly at the start of the run and it didn't get better until I finished. What would you do differently?: I have to figure out how to wheeze less. Is there some kind of lung training I can do to help asthma? Do I just need to increase my VO2 Max? Stupid breathing limits me when the rest of my body wants to go faster! Post race
Warm down: Walked around, changed clothes, ate a burger. What limited your ability to perform faster: Hills and wheezing. Event comments: Good race! I wish they'd been on time with the awards, but I guess stuff happens. Last updated: 2009-04-06 12:00 AM

On Friday, I had somehow convinced myself that this was a Saturday race, so I got home from work, packed my transition bag, got my bike ready, and went online to check the start time. Oops! It's a Sunday race! Talk about mental preparation out the window... I went to bed early anyway. I swam on Saturday but skipped my run. On Sunday, I woke up, ate breakfast, and headed out the door. I tried to put the race location into my GPS, but for some reason it wouldn't recognize it! I ended up heading to the general area, then finding someone with bikes on the back of their car and following them. They passed the road they needed to turn onto, so they did a u-turn and I did one right behind them...I'm sure they thought I was a crazy stalker or something. I got to the race with not much time to spare, picked up my packet, readied my transition area, and waited. The girl next to me showed up and was trying to rack her mountain bike and I thought "ooh, this is not going to work"...the rack was WAY too crowded and there were a few of us who wouldn't be able to untangle our bikes in T1. I brought an official over, asked if we could use the empty racks, and he let us. I moved to a not-as-great position, but had plenty of room to rack my bike and set up my stuff. Whats a few yards of running when you can actually free your bike and go?
Watched the long course start, waited around, waded in the water, and talked to a couple of people.
