Pre-race routine:

Racked the bike and packed up the night before. Got up around 4:30 and did the usual routine. water, banana and some peanut butter toast. Got Kim and Abigail up and ready then headed out the door around 5:20.
Got to the race a little after 6:00.
Picked up packet and got marked. Started setting up my transition and it started raining.

Event warmup:

Found a secret port o pot with no line. Yaaay me!!

Came across CJ hiding in a corner so sat and talked with him for a while. Just waited for my number to come up.
Swim

  • 437 yards

Comments:

UGH!! What an awful time. I've had some shoulder issues and had to take three weeks off of swimming. I never really regained any speed (not that I had much to begine with). Endurance was good but I knew I was slow when the swimmers next to me started lapping me. We were lined up by projected swim times so we should have been close. I fudged my time a little to start earlier but I knew I shouldn't be getting lapped!!
Heard a "GO STEVE!!" as I was jumping into the pool but didn't know who it was. Found out later that it was James. Thanks for the pics.
Goal was 8:45
What would you do differently?:

Swim more. Do more drills. Hire a coach.
The swim has always been my weakest event.
Transition 1
  • 02m 10s
Comments:

Goal here was 2:15. Happy with the time but know I can go faster. Felt a little woozy and had to sit down to put on my bike shoes.
What would you do differently?:

Not much. I have moutain bike shoes so they take a little longer to get on though they are easy to run with.
I really simplified my transitions based on Rick's advice.
Bike
  • 49m 2s
  • 14 miles
  • 17.13 mile/hr
Comments:

wet and windy but still my best bike time in this race. My goal was to be under 50 minutes so I hit that.
Passed a lot of people on the bike and was never passed. My overall finish was 56th so I thought my bike rank would be better than 70. The really fast bikers must have already been in front of me.
What would you do differently?:

I've been riding more and have been getting stronger and faster on the bike. Just need to keep doing what I'm doing.
Transition 2
  • 01m 27s
Comments:

Goal here was 1:30 so I was right on. My overall rank was 113 so I was slower than average for where I placed.
What would you do differently?:

My Under Armour shoes are a little harder to get on than other running shoes I've used. Need to get lace locks or yankx so I don't have to tie the shoes.
Run
  • 26m 16s
  • 3.11 miles
  • 08m 27s  min/mile
Comments:

Legs felt good coming off the bike. I have done zero brick workouts this year and in both of my races so far have done well off the bike. It could be due to the run fitness gained from my winter 50K training.
My race goal was to finish in under 1:30. My previous PR here was 1:34:XX. Came off the bike at a little over 1:02 so I knew I needed a good run (for me).
My goal run was 27:30 but pushed it from the beginning and was able to maintain an 8:30 pace for most of the run and knew I had it after mile 2.
Saw CJ looking pretty strong out there.
What would you do differently?:

Pretty pleased with this run. Need to start throwing in some speed work.
Post race
Warm down:

Kim and Abigail were waiting for me. Got my medal and some drinks.
Walked down the road a little to wait for CJ and gave him a "low 5".

What limited your ability to perform faster:

In the past I've trained to just participate in these races. If I want to perform better I need to throw some more speed work into my training and maybe lose about 10 pounds to get to a lean race weight. I was hoping to be in the top 20 in my AG and ended up 14th so now there's just a little fire that wants to start breaking into the top 10. The problem is that the 40-44 AG is VERY competitive. Overall my goal is to finish better than my race number (since we're lined up by projected swim times) and I acheived that.

Event comments:

Great race for a good cause. I've gotten to know a lot of BTers this year so it was nice to hang out and talk about the race with Rick and CJ. Nice to see Rick, who finished 2nd, sooooo excited about his wife doing the race. And, CJ come in 3rd in his AG.
This is my 3rd year doing this race and I really enjoy it.
