Pre-race routine:

Ate a waffle w/ peanut butter. Drank some water.
Event warmup:

Stretched real good. I had been battling shin splints for awhile until about 2 weeks ago when they seemed to have disappeared, so I was being extra cautious to stretch the front of my shin and my calves really well so as to not re-injure myself.

Comments:

The first time that I have even gone this far in a single run was just a couple of weeks ago and had only done 1 other run that was this long since, so I knew I could do it, but wasn't real sure how fast. My goal was 52 min. Also, do to lack of exp. w/ this distance I wasn't sure how to pace myself. I felt great the entire race, but was still hesitant to push too much harder afraid that I may overdue it too early in the race, so I kept a steady 8:00-8:15 pace for the most part. Mile 5 was the 4th hill, so my pace dropped to 8:35, but mile 6 was where I picked up the pace and ran the last 1.25 miles in 9:34 (7:40/M pace). Probablt could have picked up the overall pace a little bit, but am really happy with my time of 50:53.
What would you do differently?:

Maybe pick up the pace a bit next time. My fastest miles were mile 1 (7:50) and the last mile (7:40). I think I could pick up the pace a little bit in the middle 4 miles where I averaged around 8:20 per mile.
Post race
Warm down:

Stretched. Shin splints felt good, but my knee started to bother me a bit. Ate some banana, slice of orange, drank water and juice.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Lack of experience. I've only been seriously running for about 6-8 months. Like I mentioned, I this was only the third time I've run 6 or miles at one time. My runs before these were usually in the 2-4 mile range.

Event comments:

Great race. The post race activities were basically the food and drinks which were good and the awards ceremony. The RD was trying to use a megaphone to announce the winners, but you could barely hear anything. Not a huge deal. There were actually quite a few more runners than 82, probably around 260 or so, but they had a 5K, 10k, or you could run both and they combined your time for a 15K. There were 82 runners that ran the 10K only, so that's what I based my rank on since that's what they based there awards on. I will definitely do this race next year.

Overall: 35/82
Performance: Good
Course: A really nice course, I thought. The race started around one of the lakes in downtown Lakeland, then down to a second lake, then down to the 3rd lake. The lakes are beautiful and the streets are lined with big oak trees and beautiful homes. Each street that led to the next lake had a good size hill, so there were 4 hills total, none of them more than a couple hundred yards or so. The rest of the course was pretty flat.
