Pre-race routine:

This was my first triathlon after 1 DNS attempt 3 + years ago. Not quite sure what to do. We spent the night at a hotel, had Texas de Brazil for dinner. Way over indulged but it didn't bother me race morning. Got to bed around 11 and up at 5 am.
Event warmup:

Got everything set up and had to wait around for an hour for the race to start and another hour for my swim since it was a pool swim. Had a bannana and some water. Aprt from nerves, I felt pretty good
Swim
  • 07m 32s
  • 300 yards
  • 02m 31s / 100 yards
Comments:

Swim time had to be off, no way I swam it in 7+ minutes. Note ven on a good day.

Had the sensation of being in a washing machine and drowning all at the same time. It was crazy being in the pool with that many people. I had a plan to swim freestyle 75 m and back stroke 25m just because I knew I couldn't swim all 300 without stopping. I stuck to my plan and I have to say it went better than anticipated.
What would you do differently?:

I still need to swim more. I was still under trained for the event as a whole.
Transition 1
  • 02m 22s
Comments:

I had visions of brushing my hair, putting deoderant on in transition (WTH??). When I saw the first swimmer come out and get on their bike I knew I was dreaming. I ran through transition and took my cap and goggles off. Got to my spot and put on my socks and running shoes and took off.
What would you do differently?:

Bring a smaller bag. i felt my bag was too big and taking up too much room.
Bike
  • 1h 10m 8s
  • 13.8 miles
  • 11.81 mile/hr
Comments:

This is where I was WAY under prepared. I checked the weather when we got home and we had wind gusts of up to 40 mph with sustained winds at 20 mph. The first part of the ride was completely against the wind and the route was described as hilly with one "nice" hill. I had forgottetn to put my gloves on and I had to pull over and put those on. Put them on reverse hands the first time. Took me 5 minutes I'm sure. Then when I got to "nice" hill I had to get off my bike and walk it up. Went the fastes I've ever gone down that hil on my bike and it freaked me out a little at 32 mph. The way back was easier, but I was spent.
What would you do differently?:

I need to get over my fears and ride my bike out on the road more. I've been complacent and spending too much time on my trainer doing easy workouts.
Transition 2
  • 01m 38s
Comments:

I have cages so I rode with my running shoes. All I had to do was rack my bike, take my helmet off, put my visor on and go. This took me 1 min and 39 s ??? I was tired.
Run
  • 40m 54s
  • 3.11 miles
  • 13m 09s  min/mile
Comments:

I was TOAST. The first part of the run was directly into the wind and I could not muster the energy to run in it. I walked much more than I ever anticipated. I ran as much as I could through out the three miles and finished running for the photos - but it was much tougher than I imagined. I had taken a water bottle with me because I had nothing to drink on the bike and I was thirsty. I've never run with a water bottle before and it annoyed me to carry it. I couldn't wait to find a trash can to toss it. That being said, I drank it so it wouldn't slosh around any more and found myself having to go to the bathroom the last half of the course.
What would you do differently?:

No water bottle for sure.
Post race
Warm down:

waited for a new friend to finish. She encouraged me every step of the way and so I appreciated her for that. I felt like I had my own personal cheerleader because of her.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

need to train more and train in less than desirable conditions. I am very much a fair weather athlete.

Event comments:

This was my first race so I have nothing to compare it too. My goal was just to finish. I did have mental times I wanted to accomplish. I did better than anticipated on the swim. I did as expected on the bike and did worse on the run. I was super inspired and impressed to see people in their 70's racing. The fact that I completed this in less than desirable conditions makes me proud of the accomplishment. I never once thought of quitting. I willd o this again because I want to finish strong. I want to run my entire distance, Iwant to swim without breaks (from letting people pass me at the wall) or swimming on my back. And I want to be much stronger on the bike. The people who raced it and volunteered it where great and even though I was in the BOP I felt equally as taken care of and cheered on as the person who won it. My training log use to say, "One day I will call myself a triathlete" . Today, I will change it to "I did it! I'm a triathlete"
