Swim
Comments: Had a decent swim. The sun was directly down river where we were swimming so I had a very difficult time spotting. I started the swim on the very outside of the wave and ended up on the very inside next to the bank?? I tend to naturally drift left when I have trouble spotting, so I am assuming that is what happened. It worked out great because my wife was able to get some great up close video of my open water swim technique. Speaking of which, spotting is definitely my weakness. My legs drop every time as I rise way to far out of the water. I did have two brief periods were I was able to draft of others until a drifted out of their wake. What would you do differently?: I exited the swim with a low HR, which is exactly what I wanted to do. So I don't think I would have tried to swim at a much harder effort. I would have liked to have spotted and drafted much better. Transition 1
Comments: Bike was set up right next to swim exit/transition entrance. Had my goggles and cap off while running up from swim. Glasses, helmet, shoe, shoe and I was off. Not bad. What would you do differently?: Learn the flying mount with shoes already clipped into pedals. Bike
Comments: Stuck to my pre-race strategy. Came out of transition hard and then got in an easier gear and lowered my RPE until I was comfortable. Rode at this pace until the turn around and then HAMMERED IT all the way back to the park. Once inside the park, got in a easy gear, got my feet out of my shoes and jumped off my bike at the dismount line. Felt great...first time to ever average 22mph! What would you do differently?: On the dismount, let go of the breaks. My back tire came off the ground and my chain fell off. I just picked up my bike and carried it to the transition rack. Transition 2
Comments: Helmet, shoe, shoe, hat, race belt. What would you do differently?: Went well. Run
Comments: I could actually feel my legs during the run. This was my 5th or 6th triathlon and today was the first time I had legs after the bike!! My run time wasn't quite as fast as I would have hoped, but I am very pleased about how my legs felt. What would you do differently?: Pick up my pace a little earlier. Post race
Warm down: .5 mile walk. Light stretch. What limited your ability to perform faster: Lack of swim training. The heat. Need to improve on the run. Event comments: They ran out of water and gatorade during post race. But they had great food! Last updated: 2009-04-07 12:00 AM

Drove to lake charles the morning of the race, about a 1hr commute. Everything was going well until I realized I forgot my USAT card at the house. Luckily, I was only about 5 minutes down the road but it was about a 20 minute delay. 5am - Breakfast was a bagel with peanut butter and honey along with one cup of coffee. 6am-7am - driving to Lake Charles and drank 20oz of accelerade. 7am-730am - drank a red bull.
Arrived at race site at 7:20. Picked up race number and timing chip. Set up bike in transition, since I was late I was on the furthest rack for the bike out/in. Also, as soon as I was done in transition it was time for pre-race meeting and I was in the first swim wave, so, no time for warmup. Swam about 100 meters before swim start.
