Swim
Comments: In my 33 years of participation in athletic events life I have never experienced a complete and total meltdown like I did during the swimming portion of this race. It was beyond awful. As the countdown began and the race director said the word "three" the dude in front of me takes off and kicks me square in the the ding ding. The guy behind me grabs my ankle and pulls me down. Mind you the race hasn't even officially begun yet. I am under the water with a throbbing manhood thinking "ok . . . i get it . . . prison rules". I spent the next few hundred yards wondering if I would ever get in a rhythm. I did not. An empty styrofoam cup passed me at the third buoy. What would you do differently?: Not sure. I devoted more time to this than the bike or run. I spent countless hours in the pool over the last few months and followed the training plan religiously. I literally could not swim this time last year. I took some private lessons and felt good about my progress leading up to the race. I went from not being able to complete 25 yards to doing a mile nonstop. I was averaging ~2:10 in the pool - go figure. Transition 1
Comments: Had no idea what I was doing. Tried to look cool. What would you do differently?: Maybe try the pre-mounted shoe thing. Bike
Comments: Average performance, steady crosswinds. I saw a lot of drafting going on but maybe that is normal. What would you do differently?: With a seventh month old child you sacrifice time in the saddle. I had to settle for a lot of trainer and gym stationary bike training. I hope with more milage I can increase my speed/endurance. No complaints since got out what I put into this discipline. Transition 2
What would you do differently?: Practice more. Run
Comments: My one strong point. It took me much longer to get my running legs under me than any of my training bricks. I chalk that up to actually riding on a real road as opposed to indoors, i.e. vibration, winds, etc. and the toll it takes on your muscles. What would you do differently?: Push a litter harder on the front end of the run. I felt like I held back a tad in the first loop because I felt too good at the finish. Post race
Warm down: Met the wife and kid at the finish line. Wanted a beer. They were not serving yet. Booooo. What limited your ability to perform faster: Swimming. swimming, swimming. Event comments: I really enjoyed this race. Like most of you all say - you do get hooked. I am already planning my next race. I need to get back to the pool and get some more professional help. This was my first tri. I had no clue what I was doing but still managed to have a great time.
Wife dropped me off at Moody ~ 5:30. I spent the first 5 minutes looking around and trying to see what everyone else was doing with regards to setting up their transition area. Amazingly, I had everything I needed. I lurked around this website for a while and made list after list required gear. Some dude who looked like he knew what he was doing even had to ask me for some tape for his bike. So I had that going for me. I got dressed and put body glide on every square inch of my body and slide down to the swim start.
Nothing.
