Swim
Comments: I felt good and just stayed within myself. I navigated well and didn't zig zag all over the course like several of the other competitors did. 3rd out of the water wasn't bad considering I never train for the swim. What would you do differently?: Train a little bit. But what is it going to get me? A minute, maybe? Transition 1
Comments: I felt good about the transition. I actually passed to 2nd guy out of the swim in transition. Bike
Comments: Put in a solid lap. My goal was 50 minutes and I surpassed that easily. I was never out of breath and my legs were never burning like they normally do on my Wednesday night rides on this course. I think I may have left a minute or so out there. What would you do differently?: Push harder on the flats. That is my achilles heel on this course, I keep too much in the tank on the flat sections. Transition 2
Comments: Forgot to slip my feet out of my shoes before the tent. I have quick releases on my MTB shoes, so it probably cost me 5 seconds. What would you do differently?: Pull my feet out of shoes on the road into transition. Run
Comments: I was 3rd coming off the bike and had 4 minutes to make up on the leader. I caught the 1st guy in less than a half mile. I wasn't sure if I could catch the leader until I caught sight of him at the 1.5 mile mark. As soon as I saw his stride I knew I would reel him in. He was taking long, slow strides and was not smooth at all. I increased my cadence and set my sights. I caught him at the 3 mile mark and went right on by. My main concern was the guy who got off the bike in 4th. He was all state cross country in 2008 and is 18 years old. He was closing, but didn't catch me. What would you do differently?: Nothing. Post race
Warm down: personally thanked every competitor for coming to the race, gave out awards, cheered on the rest of the finishers, tore down the race site. What limited your ability to perform faster: As the event organizer I was very busy all week, not allowing me to train at all. I also spent a considerable amount of energy the night before the race setting everything up. Event comments: Everything was on time, aid stations at two points during the bike and every mile on the run. As attendance grows, the race will get better and better. Organized the race, made sure volunteers were at aid stations, answered everyone's questions, participant meeting, and everything else a race director does on race day.
Swam 15 meters out and back.
