Swim
Comments: excellent start -- waited at the back of the pack to let others go ahead. Breathing good, free style - -ran into someone's feet; moved over and started again - -ran into someone's feet - - why is everyone doing the Breast Stroke??? stop to look for opening, struggled getting clear - -ended up side stroke - - tried to return to free style - could not get breathing under control - -floated momentarily to calm down - - side stroke (torpedo shape!!) the whole way - - -got out ahead of 5 or 6 swimmers doing the breast stroke!!!! - - -strong stroke - - some curving back and forth - -not too bad though. Getting out, walked using arms to propel forward faster - - took a few minutes to get my land legs. wetsuit perfect temperature - almost hot near the end - wore 2 bathing caps (lycra and traithlon cap). What would you do differently?: wait longer to start and make sure I have a clear path ahead of me - need practice breathing in murky water (I had no problem at first - - maybe it was the jostling and running into legs and bodies???) i was extremely suprised at my swim time - - I thought for SURE I had taken 40-45 minutes when it was only 23 minutes??? The distance had to be shorter than I thought!!! Transition 1
Comments: wetsuit came off very easily (used body glide on lower arms and legs) no problem with timing chip on ankle - had to put on bike shorts (note to self: body is wet, had to use towel to dry legs in order to get shorts on); shorts, shirt, shoes socks, glasses, helmet - no problem - -gloves took longer - - biggest time sink was walking from beach to transition area - - -legs pretty wobbily. mounting on bike was not good - - What would you do differently?: run faster to transition area; practice jumping on bike; wear shorts under wetsuit; Bike
Comments: weak start out of the transition area - - - slow to get feet into clips; raining a little - -cadence felt okay - - wind was tough - no break - had 2 people pass me - yuck! I passed 2 others and couldn't catch the girl in red - - - I trailed her in the run too!! Downed a goo gel (strawberry hammer) at about 10 miles - - perfect! What would you do differently?: practice jumping on and off the bike and getting feet into the clips!! although this was my slowest, I guess I need more conditioning to go faster/stronger - - gears felt good - - did not want to push too hard because I knew I had the run afterwards. It felt okay, but actually took longer than I thought. - maybe wear a watch or computer on the bike so I can see how I'm doing. Transition 2
Comments: I had my right foot out of the clips and then my left, but had to completely stop to get off the bike - - -legs were wobbily - ran to rack - easy to rack bike - - quick change of shoes; and helmet for hat - -ran out to run What would you do differently?: I never thought to take my feet out of my shoes - - (and leave my shoes on the pedals) - nor to take my helmet off, while running - - run faster to start of run Run
Comments: weak start - -had to walk/run the first mile - got some gatorade - tasted good - - set my sites on passing a couple more women in front of me - cheering from the volunteers REALLY helped. - - carried a water bottle with me - - tossed it at the 1.5 mile mark - - too much to carry - nice and cool out - - temperature was perfect! Very strong finish - - I was just getting comfortable!!! What would you do differently?: not carry water - there was plenty available and I was already hydrated - -maybe eat another gel - practice brick runs (going from bike to run) to get my legs back - work on pacing a little faster. Post race
Warm down: walk it off - back to transition area - - did not feel like eating or drinking anything!!! What limited your ability to perform faster: breathing on the swim - wind on the bike - - wobbily legs on run Event comments: BIG PROBLEM - - the address on the website was NOT the marina, but the Parks and Recreation Office in Salisbury - - - Information did not have a listing from Cedar Hill Marina in Bivalve or Salisbury. Practice putting on wetsuit and taking it off; put on bike gear and take it off; put on run gear; visualize swimming and bubble breathing, strong stroke; package pickup day before; drive run and bike course; eat oatmeal for breakfast (at 7:30am) , drink LOTS of water night before and morning of... take 2 aspirin; observe set up of other athletes; set up bike on rack with all men (excellent choice - -no one around during MY transition) - ate a granola bar 1 hour before start of race (9am). Race started at 10am - -my wave at about 10:20am.
worried about water temp - - -allowed into water -- I went into water up to my chest - - not as bad as I thought - - small talk with other participants; check location of bike rack from both bike in/out and run in/out; tie pink and green bandana to bike rack - - use lime green corona bag to pack stuff (easy to see when coming in and out).
