Run
Comments: If you were racing you probably would have identified me as the dope that had his shoe laces untied! My right one got untied ten seconds into the run and I didn't stop so I had to deal with that! Fought the urge to go out too hard on the first run since this was only my second duathlon ever. I ran hard and controlled. The weather was pretty miserable and all I could really think of was the long long bike ahead. What would you do differently?: Run a little harder Transition 1
Comments: Since I wasn't racing this I took my time in transitions and this is where I lost most of my time. I was real cold and didn't want to forget anything. I could have easily done this in half the time, but I wasn't in much of a rush and I'm not too upset with the awful time. What would you do differently?: Nothing. Bike
Comments: The conditions were pretty poor so I decided ealry in the ride I was going to focus on safe but hard riding. I did a good job on the climbs and recovered on the flats. The course was really nice and if it wasn't raining it was definitely a fast course. The fasties went 25 MPH on this. The volunteers were awesome directing traffic and giving encouragement. It was almost comical to be racing in these conditions so I just tried to have a good attitude. The course was actually 21 miles instead of 18.6 so it was more than just a regular sprint. What would you do differently?: My goal is to race in the 20's, but considering the conditions today that was not realistic. Happy with the effort I gave escpecially considering I couldn't feel my hands of legs coming into T2. Transition 2
Comments: Just like before I wasn't too freaked about transitions so I took my time again. If I didn't lollygag on both transitions I could have saved about three minutes and placed much higher, but I wasn't racing and I'm okay with my results here. What would you do differently?: Nothing. Run
Comments: It took me about two miles to get feeling back in my legs so I didn't push this run either. I did have a nice negative split which made me feel good. I could have been a lot faster, but I was content where I was at. This was actually my best leg of the race and it was with much less effort than any of the others! I was glad to be done! What would you do differently?: Push harder in a race atmosphere. Post race
Warm down: I took off all my wet clothes and got some dry stuff on. I hurried out thinking I didn't win any awards because I saw kids in my age group finish before me. Turns out they were relay runners so I actually won my age group! I will have to pick up my prize sometime else! What limited your ability to perform faster: The 20 MPH winds? The cold rain? No incentive to race? Event comments: Organization was tops! Everything was on time and volunteers were great! This was a fun and memorable race. There were 14 DNF's this year which is a pretty high number for the size of the race. Hopefully next year the conditions will favor a little faster race because this was a fast and fun course! The race location is only 25 minutes from my house which is nice because I didn’t have to wake up early. I had a peanut butter sandwich at home and took water and a GU to nibble on before the race. The weather for this race did not cooperate: 40 degrees and pouring rain the whole race. I got all my cold weather gear together and headed off to the race. I wasn’t necessarily “racing” today. I planned on two controlled runs and a tempo effort on the bike.
Hid from the rain as best as I could!
