Swim
Comments: I started with the 20-29 and Clydesdales wave. The whole swim was very foggy. There was some collisions but it was not as bad as I have read about. I started the event at the back of the wave, fearing a lot of collisions. I wish I had started at the front. I spent the entire swim passing people. And, yes, colliding with them, Though, unintentionally. The entire swim was easy. I felt like I was on autopilot. What would you do differently?: I would start at the front, or near the front of the wave. I would like to have done a run then dive into the water. Transition 1
Comments: Well, I made a newbie mistake. I knew it had to happen somewhere. I got into T1, got my gear configured, had a little confusion on whether I was putting on running or cycling shoes - due to temporary euphoria from completing stage 1. I grabbed to bike, and ran the wrong direction. After a little assistance from the dude with the megaphone, I got turned around and was on my way. What would you do differently?: Practice getting out of the water and doing T1, not just practicing T1. I want it ingrained in my head that when I get out of the pool/lake/river/bay/ocean , I am getting on the bike. Bike
Comments: I need to drink more on the bike. Need to try to take in more nutrition on the bike. Definitely need a more aggressive race pace. I was a little disappointed in my speed. What would you do differently?: Add a couple of bottle holders on the front of the bike so they are easier to access. Push harder, I was too worried about burning out before the run. Transition 2
Comments: T2 was much better than T1. The only problem was that there were too may people trying to get into T2 at the same time, so there was somewhat of a line and a wait. I paused for a second or two to take a Gu, yanked off the cycling shoes, pulled on the running shoes, tied laces, took off helmet, and was off. What would you do differently?: Practice, Practice, Practice for more efficiency. Take a water bottle with me. Run
Comments: Did not have enough water. See comments from bike. I was dead tired by the end of the run. I am used to hitting the last 1/4 mile hard on running races. Not here. By the end I had only 2 goals for the run 1-Don't walk and 2-Don't pass out. What would you do differently?: Take a water bottle with me. Practice the run more. Post race
Warm down: Grabbed some strawberries, water, and fig newtons. Walked around and looked at the booths. What limited your ability to perform faster: Lack of practice on the transitions. Need more running. Lack of experience. Event comments: I only wish there were two other things: 1. More bathrooms available before the race. 2. One additional water station on the run. It was freaking hot. Last updated: 2009-04-11 12:00 AM

Packed Gear the night before. Woke up at 4:40. Poured cup of coffee from pre-set coffee maker. Ate a mini bagel with peanut butter. Scrambled to get wife and her sister into the car. Drove down I-275 and followed all of the other cars and trucks with bikes on them. We were the only ones on the road at that time.
Se up transition area. Asked lots of questions to the veterans to make sure I was doing everything correctly.
Walked around the the race area.
