Swim
Comments: So I started in front even though my swimming was not even close to where it was last year. Started steady and stayed there. Very little bumping on the start. Just swam to the first bouy and rounded it wide to avoid otheres. GOt to the next turn and hugged the bouy as no one was there. Had good feet until this point. Caught the wave ahead but it was spread out. Just put the head down and swam to the exit. Felt good and breathing was not hard but comfortable. Stood up and the watch said 13 minutes on the nose. Happy with that. Another minute run up the beach to T1. Hustled up the beach and passed some guys and pulled the wetsuit down to the waist and pulled off the cap and googles. No issues on the swim. Swam to my ability today. 50 seconds slower than last year. What would you do differently?: Swim more hard efforts. Transition 1
Comments: I was 4th fastest in the agegroup here. No problems with the wetsuit. Had to pause to reset the computer then ran to the bike exit in the shoes today and hopped on and got into a good steady pace. What would you do differently?: Reset the computer before the race. Bike
Comments: I started a bit hard and got by some slower guys. All guys in front today as the girls waves went after us. Played tag with 3 other guys up to the top of 36. Tried not to race them yet as it was uphill and my hill climbing is never real good. Waited for the downhill on 36. Passed all of them back and never saw them again. Noone passed me on the bike today. Was very happy with the ride after riding 380 miles the week leading up. Stayed steady throughout and easier on the hills and pushed the downhills. Felt like I was flying today. Only 7 seconds slower than last year. What would you do differently?: Nothing. Fastest in the agegroup. Transition 2
Comments: 2nd fastest in the agegroup. Some guy beat me by 1 second. Darn it. I had a long run to my spot and a long run to the run exit. What would you do differently?: nothing Run
Comments: So the plan was to hold on. Ran steady from the get go. The pace I would hold for the whole run. My running is crap right now. I was 19:23 here last year. so a full minute and change slower. Anyway, picked off some guys in the agegroup and was feeling good about that. However at mile 2, 2 guys in my agegroup came roaring by me and I knew at this point I was out of the podium. I was in 2nd place until then. Very dissapointed with the run today. I just had nothing left to push and had a side stitch from mile 1 on. Ohwell, I need to run more to be competitve on the run. What would you do differently?: run more and do more speed work. Post race
Warm down: Drank some beer, Avery brewery rocks. Talked with lots of people and waited in the hour and a half line to get some food. What limited your ability to perform faster: Not enough swimming and running off the bike. Event comments: Another great race put on by Barry and Jodee of 5430 sports. Was a bit bummed about the way packet pickup and entering transition went but it all turned out fine. Lots of fast guys and the weather was awesome. Last updated: 2009-04-11 12:00 AM

My wife and I did ride the rockies the week before the race. It was 380 miles of riding in 6 days. We got little sleep and got home Friday night. Skipped packet pickup on Sat to rest and go early on Sunday to pick up the packets on race day.
Got up at 3:25 and ate a waffle and a fruit/protein shake and some coffee.
Headed to Boulder at 4 and got there at 4:50. When we got there the gal told us that we could not drive in and had to wait. I said screw it and drove in on the side where all the athletes parked and walked up to TZ area and packet pickup. Pickup was supposed to be at 5. We couldn't get them until 5:30. Finally got them and lined up to get chips and get our TZ spots. Found an end spot. Right by the swim entrance. Chatted with some folks and pumped up the zipps and Renn and was ready to go.
I had no expectations for this race. I have had very minimal swimming. Farthest swim has been 2000 yards. Running has been minimal as well. SO the plan was to just swim a steady pace, bike as fast and hard as I could, and hang on in the run.
Ran with Adam D. (Gearwhore) for and about a mile and then found my wife and we headed to the swim beach. My wave was wave 4 and hers was 9. There were 10 waves.
Got in the water and swam a bit to get acclimated and warmed up.
