Pre-race routine:

Woke up around 4:15AM. Only about 4hrs sleep. Ate a turkey and butter on wheat sandwich, a bowl of oatmeal with craisins, and a glass of milk. Drove from KC to Columbia. Arrived around 6:30AM. Rushed to set up in transition.
Event warmup:

Minimal stretching. Ate 1 key lime accel gel.
Swim
  • 09m 45s
  • 440 yards
  • 10s / 100 yards
Comments:

Very poor swim. Went out too hard. Lack of any swimming practice in last month definitly showed. Not accustomed to 50yd pool. Lack of push off ever 25yds made for poor job of seeding myself.
What would you do differently?:

Pace better. Train more.
Transition 1
  • 01m 55s
Comments:

Took time to eat 1 raspberry cream accel gel with 40mg caffeine and down some water. Put on tri top which took a while because I was wet and it stuck to my body.
What would you do differently?:

Take in gel on bike. Get to venue earlier to get a better transition spot. Wear tri top in water.
Bike
  • 43m 24s
  • 14 miles
  • 19.35 mile/hr
Comments:

Rented a road bike for the race. Old Fuji Finest with platform pedals. 3rd bike ride on a road bike.
What would you do differently?:

Bike shoes with clipless pedals would certain make me more competitive. Need to tape gels to bike or put in pockets of shirt. A second bottle holder with water for gels would also be nice.
Transition 2
  • 00m 48s
Comments:

Had an accel chocolate accel gel with 20mg caffeine and water to wash it down.
What would you do differently?:

Take in the gel on the later part of the bike.
Run
  • 18m 57s
  • 3.1 miles
  • 06m 07s  min/mile
Comments:

Felt great on the run. Could've pushed a little harder but not much.
What would you do differently?:

Pace better. Need a watch to clock time rather just running by feel.
Post race
Warm down:

Stretched. Had a slice of cheese pizza from the wonderful people at shakespeare's pizza. Also had a protein shake, and a banana.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

I need to finally get a road or tri bike as well as bike shoes and clipless pedals. I let myself down with the lack of swim training leading up to the race. Also, it'd be a good idea to arrive at the race venue the day before as well as get more then 4hrs sleep. Fix a few of these things and I definitly would have placed in the top 3 in my division.

Event comments:

My first real triathlon. Great experience. Really got my motivation up. Looking forward to more triathlons and more Ultramax events.
