Comments: Wave start from beach. Started towards back of pack on the outside. Stayed there most of the race tacking on some unecessary distance. Navigation improved but still lacking. Drafted a couple of times but only for short stints. What would you do differently?: Find someone to draft off of. Get a wetsuit. Transition 1
Comments: Put on bike shoes at rack, got a swig of accelerade and ran out of transition. What would you do differently?: Shoes in pedals. Helmet on and buckled on way out of transition. Get to venue earlier for better spot. Jump on bike. Bike
Comments: Finally got a bike the day before the race. Less than a mile on it before race, just enough to get seat height. Needless to say I learned a lot on the bike during the race. Wasn't in correct gear for first hill and had to run it. Chain came off 3/4 through and couldn't get it to reengage. Had to stop and put it back on. Gels on top tube rubbed against legs. 1 accel gel w/40mg caffeine at start. 1/2 through went to eat a second gel and accidently opened two gels at once and just went ahead and took them both in which left no gel for right before run. What would you do differently?: Move shifters from end of drop handlebars to the brakes or the aerobars. Mount tire inflator on back of seat. Put gels in bento box. Add a second water bottle, preferably an aero bottle up front. Transition 2
Comments: Uncliped shoes and ran with bike shoes on over to rack. Got a swig of accelerade. What would you do differently?: Feet out of shoes on ride in. Jump off bike. Put pull tabs on back of run shoes. Run
Comments: Took water or heed at every station. Took sponges at many stations as well. Stomach started acting up 1.5miles out. Slowed down a bit. What would you do differently?: Nothing. Post race
Warm down: 5 min light jog. Light stretch. Cool dip in lake. What limited your ability to perform faster: Lack of sleep. No experience on bike or in aero position. Lack of wetsuit. Stomach problems. 3.75 hours of sleep. Woke up at 3AM. Ate a slice of bread with turkey and another with black current jam. Also had kashi hot cereal. Drove to Innsbrook from KC. Arrived around 6:40. Set up in transition two racks from the run entrance/exit. Ate 1 accel gel 40min out.
5min of light swimming.
