Swim
Comments: Rough start. My first open water swim and first group start. I spent the first fourth with my head up. 2nd forth head down but dragging legs. Last half got in rhythm and was golden all the way in. What would you do differently?: Start further back in pack. Draft off someone's feet. Wait to get in water(body temp plummeted waiting in water). Get a wetsuit. Transition 1
Comments: Decided on the fly not to put on shirt. Just put on running shoes and left with bike. Fumbled with sunglasses. What would you do differently?: Bucket with water for sand removal. Sunglasses on top of helmet. Get to venue early to get best bike rack. Guide bike with one hand, put on helmet and buckle with the other. Jump on bike. Bike
Comments: Took in one Accel gel with 20mg caffeine and lost water bottle at the start of second lap. What would you do differently?: Take descents faster. Get down in to drop bars more often. I need to finally get a road bike and stop renting. Making the switch from platform pedals to clipless pedals and bike shoes wouldn't hurt either. Transition 2
Comments: Just racked bike, removed helmet and left. What would you do differently?: Get to venue earlier to get ideal rack. Direct bike by saddle with one hand, unclip and remove helmet with the other. Run
Comments: Took water at all aid stations. Had a bit left in tank after finishing. What would you do differently?: Start final surge earlier. Post race
Warm down: Totally forgot to do anything. What limited your ability to perform faster: Lack of sleep going in. Lack of open water experience. Lack of swim practice. Lack of equipment(wetsuit, road bike, clipless pedals, bike shoes). Event comments: My 2nd real triathlon and I had a great time. Woke at 5:45. Oatmeal for breakfast. Took in one hammer gel with 50mg caffeine 40min prior to my wave's start(7:45 AM).
Quick jog and a quick dip in the lake(bad idea with the cold water and no wetsuit).
