Swim
Comments: Just paddled along encouraging training partner through swim, very slow and easy. Added buoancy from wetsuit helped at that pace. What would you do differently?: Nothing in this situation, if going it alone...REALLY swim! Transition 1
Comments: NEVER managed to get left shoe clipped in whole ride, had adjusted night before as right was hard to clip in, right was fine now left wasn't. What would you do differently?: Be sure everything is working properly several practices before race, not just night before. Practice for speed. Bike
Comments: Just cruised along behind training partner, as we wanted to stick together for this first race, and she was on a hybrid bike. Only peddled 2/3 of time. Did drink entire water bottle ad had energy chews. What would you do differently?: Practice corners and in groups if possible. Transition 2
Comments: Just cruising along. What would you do differently?: Practice, move much faster. Run
Comments: A little too much water on bike, needed potty break from start of run, but made it through. Training partner need to walk 3 times, so pretty slow. Somewhere around mile 2, a minivan hit a motorcyclist approx 10 yards behind us. Ran back to give assistance, back on run in just a couple of minutes...very scary though. What would you do differently?: Not walk, not witness a MVA. Post race
Warm down: Really didn't break a sweat till dash to finish line, so just wandered around a bit, had some water and a banana and pear, and edamame salsa type thing and mini cupcake from WholeFoods. Perfect weather-around 57 at start and low 70s at finish. What limited your ability to perform faster: As this was our first ever race, decided to hang with training partner, especially as she was still VERY worried about swim. But had a great time. No sore foot or knee, not winded at all...carbo loading and ibuprofen and tylenol I believe really helped. Event comments: Great beginner's race, very comfortable and fun. Carbo loading at Maggiano's night before...pasta and bread, no alcohol for a few days before either. Got up at 4am in hotel. Ate a banana and 1/2 whole wheat bagel with peanut butter. Lubed wetsuit and self. Took two trips to car to load gear and checkout of hotel, pausing briefly to take in the DucKon color whom were still partying from the night before...pirates, pleather clad, spock-eared...wow! Arrived at race site 5:30 (after slight direction mishap on way, note to self, don't only drive course and to race site day before, also find parking lot!) Transition closed at 6:45, so actually perfect timing.
Not much warmup other than wandering around and periodic Port-o-john stops (big workout when in trisuit AND wetsuit). Took 2 Ibuprofen and 2 Tylenol about 1 hour before atart, had one pack of energy chews approx 45 minutes before swim. First wave went off at 7:00, ours started at 7:44am.
