Swim
Comments: I had a terrible performance. I got stuck behind 3 slow swimmers and when I finally broke free I ended up deciding not to sight (i was swimming straight I swear) and ended up about 20 yards off course. This happened a 2nd time as I sprinted in to the beach. I also decided to 'porpoise' through the first set of bouys because the bay was so shallow...ended up taking more energy What would you do differently?: No porpoising through the bouys, needed to sight better. Go harder in the first 200 meters. I can swim faster than my time shows, just made some mistakes. Transition 1
Comments: Well, they wouldn't let us do a 'flying mount' and as a result I had to ride for about 30 yards with my feet on top of my shoes, over a bridge before I was 'legally' allowed to strap in. I had planned on just slipping my feet in and going. What would you do differently?: not much, felt pretty good. Maybe get a brighter colored towel, i got lost for a second Bike
Comments: Well not sure what my cadence was as I think I pushed the magnet (or whatever) accidentally out of position. It worked when i checked it this morning. I felt good on the bike and have seen improvements. The headwind was hellish at best but once you turned around the tailwind was quite nice. Good course, just a bit confusing. A cop had 'coned' off the race course in one area, which made it appear as if you had to make a hard right. A couple of people did and lost precious time. What would you do differently?: Go a bit slower with the tailwind and a bit harder with the headwind. Utilize the tailwind to conserve my energy. Make sure my cadence is working, i think i was in the low-mid 100s. Transition 2
Comments: My running shoes were wet so it was hard to get those on. I accidentally unclicked my one foot so I had one foot barefoot and one with a shoe on. Slightly annoying. What would you do differently?: Tighten my left pedal so my shoe doesn't unclip Run
Post race
Warm down: Drive home. Stretch. Not much. Sun came out later in the day...that was nice. What limited your ability to perform faster: I started to cramp up as I took off on the run, even though I knew I was dropping out. I wanted to get a feel for the transition. I should've drank more water/sports drink prior to the race. I think there was a solid hour where I had nothing to drink. Also, I need to find a way to sleep more before the race. The anxiety is definitely impacting my performance. Event comments: The policemen with the cones across the race course really upset me. By the 2nd lap they were gone, it still was a bit frustrating though. Not sure on post-race, it was pouring rain so I left. It seemed well organized, the race director was constantly on the megaphone reminding people of times to be at swim start. There were enough porta-potties which is always a plus (and even some by the race start). I would like to do this race next year and redeem myself. Last updated: 2009-04-14 12:00 AM

Barely any sleep the night before, which is becoming standard before my races. Had a bowl of oatmeal around 5am with a spoonful of peanut butter and some honey. Had a glass of water before I left and ate a banana en route.
Swam about 100 yds or so. By far the worst weather conditions I have seen at a triathlon. Steady rain, howling wind and air temps in the low 60s. I swam without a wetsuit. The water was warmer than the air.
