Swim
Comments: Firstly 60F is not cold when you have a full wetsuit. I was worried about this before the race and it turned out to be a non issue. Wave start was fine, I started a little wide in the second row. Turned out the people in front of me were slow and so I had to get around them pretty early on. I had to stop to let water out of my goggles. Why is it that in thousands of yards of training I never once have a water in goggles issue, but 50 yards into a race and they are filled with water? First 500m was a little crowded but after that it thinned out and was a good swim. What would you do differently?: Nothing really. Transition 1
Comments: Quite a long run in shoes but it wasn't too bad. What would you do differently?: Possibly get tri shoes so that I can run and mount and thereby save 30 seconds that is the difference between 5th and 3rd in age group. Bike
Comments: Apparently I am not a very good cyclist. I felt strong. I felt comfortable and was in aero position almost all the time. It was a nice course and flatter than I am used to. Yet, people would catch up to me and cycle off into the distance. It is definitely an area that I need to improve on. It would start with me overcoming my aversion to the trainer. I also felt that I had not put enough liquids on my bike and had to sip sparingly. What would you do differently?: Embrace the trainer on those long winter nights. Transition 2
Run
Comments: Felt good on the run and was able to pick off a lot of runners. I felt that a little more water on the course would have been good as it was starting to feel hot. Run was pleasant without any major hills and with the out and back loops I was able to see who was ahead of me and who was behind. What would you do differently?: Nothing really. Post race
Warm down: 60F is too cold to take a full plunge post race! Met up with Shannon and our three little ones. Negotiated the dispute between Leah and Ellen as to 1. who would get the race number and 2. who would get to wear the running belt. Event comments: A good event in the middle of nowhere. Brought together a lot of triathletes from a few major centers. Definitely a to be repeated experience. All the big things were well taken care of. Last updated: 2009-04-19 12:00 AM

Up at about 6.30 and had my normal breakfast of granola and a cup of tea. Woke up the family, loaded the car and we drove to the start, which took about 1h15.
I normally don't warm up, believing that I will save the energy for the course, but on this occasion I did have a 20 yard swim so that I could get a feel for the water as I was expecting it to be cold and it had been about 6 months since I'd put on the wetsuit.
